O.K., thanks for posting all that guys, but mainly my problem is just that one of the pieces won't fit together. The two gold pieces are supposed to fit into being one link right? Well the one piece that is supposed to make up the "top" of the link, will not go through the link it needs to to connect to the chain.
Hopefully, the drawing sheds some light on this problem. |

you may just need to take off another half link or so, can't really tell by your drawing what you mean
using this picture, both ends of the chain (before you put the powerlink on) should both end with the thin plates ![]() you using a gold powerlink on a 9 speed chain right?

maybe it's a bad link? it's rare but maybe it's out of tolerance?

Yes, a gold powerlink on a 9-speed chain.
The problem isn't the size of the chain, (which may turn out to be a whole 'nother problem), but the actual diameter of the hole that is the problem, I can't fit the one 1/2 of the power link into the chain's hole. It's weird, because it only fits on one end, and I just tried both 1/2's of the power link on one end of the chain, and they both fit one one end of the chain, but not the other! |

I learned this the hard way when I broke my 9-speed chain on Holy Jim and tried for about 20 minutes to install a 10-speed link. No workie. Luckily a friend of mine had a 9-speed link which went together in about 2 seconds. |
