I hate climbs!

I have question for the more seasoned riders w/some mechanic experience.
I have Giant Anthem ('06) that came with stock Hayes Sol HD brake system. I decided to upgrade my brakes, and chose to stay with Hayes since I already had a Hayes setup. I took advantage of a sale at Jenson and bought the Hayes 9 system. This is my first time trying this, but last night I decided to install the brakes. Well I ran into a problem, well 2. First, on my fork (Manitou R7) when tighten, the casing sits angled which causes the disc to rub the pad. The second problem is the rear brake housing. The post on the frame are for a side mounting brake, but the rear brake housing for the 9s are to be mounted on top of the frame and not the side. I was thinking that I should just take the brakes and the bike into Jenson this afternoon and have them to mount it, but first I thought that I would see if any of you had any ideas for me. |

When you tighten up the front bolts, try holding down the lever. That should help keep it centered while tightening. Only tighten a little at a time - alternating bolts.
Sounds like you just need a different adapter for the rear - or even an adapter period. You need an IS adapter. |

Quest: Singletrack

Taking your bike to Jenson or any LBS is a good idea. Let the pros handle it, but make sure you find out what they did so that it goes into your knowledge bank if you think you'll want to wrench on your own bikes.
I find that washers work great for positioning the brake calipers just right, especially when there is some sort of frame/fork misalignment. Sounds like you need an adapter for the rear. Let us know how it works out. BTW, the Hayes 9 is an excellent set of brakes. Had one a while back that were great stoppers! |

Ok, I took to Jenson and had them to do the install. First off, I am embarassed. Well not really, but Luis threw the front brake and had it adjusted before I could even turn around and look at a display. I had to purchase an adapter for the back, but now they are own and dialed in.
I have heard good things about these brakes, so I can't wait to try'em out. I know that they are not fancy, but should work pretty good for me. |
