Lightbulb bike shorts - opinions

My roommate recently got himself some nifty fox riding shorts. Are these things worth the dough?

Anybody have a particular brand they like?

I have the Fox Epic shorts I got 70% off. I like them but would never pay full retail for them. Better than riding with board shorts.

Look around and you can find these for a lot cheaper like $50-$60 or even less for last years line.- Lloyd

I like the Hoss Ponderosa, they work well. Only downside is the liner is sown into the outer. No washing separately.

Hoss also makes a two piece short (stallion I think?) but I haven't had the opportunity to try them.

Some guys just run road shorts (tight spandex...ewww) and then wear surf trunk type shorts over them. It's the most affordable option I think.

Just wear a pair of your favorite boxer shorts.
Their $6, butt don't provide much protection...

Fox and Troy Lee Designs make great shorts. They're a little more money, but worth it.

Just about as soon as I read about even the possibility of it affecting my groin region I found a nice pair of riding shorts. I got Hoss Ponderosa and they are great. I guess if kids aren't your thing then save yourself the $45

Yes, good shorts are worth the money. No, you shouldn't pay MSRP. I've had good luck with Wheel World and REI sales.

For $24 you can get a Padded Cycling Liner at REI. It basically turns any comfy shorts into riding shorts.

Zoic had some nice deals on their site for some of their older shorts.

I too have the Hoss Ponderosa and am looking to get another one in a different color. Best thing about it is that they look like 'normal' shorts for off-bike walking around and the padding isnt obvious.

The only caveat I'd put on this is that when I wore this kind of setup my baggy shorts often snagged when moving to the back of the saddle. Boardshorts seem to work better than cotton casual shorts. The bike-specific shorts seem to be "tastefully snug" in the inseam, preventing this problem.

I've used cycling short under regular shorts and the Hoss Ponderosas. The Hoss shorts are by far my favorite for feel and performance. The problem with the other way is that the shorts get caught on your seat and can fall down while you ride.

I've read that lots of people have this problem but I have yet to ever get caught on my seat. Maybe I'm just lucky?

i remember seeing that on a roadie forum a while ago. it was something about wearing black shorts over any other color.

but anyways, i'd have the fox epic shorts and some perfomance bike brand shorts. i've got the boulder shorts, they're pretty nice. the padding is alright but they were $40 so yeah...

I'm sitting here post-ride in some Pearl Izumi shorts I found through REI's closeout section of their web site. $75 or $80 msrp was marked down to $23 and I was able to pick them up at the local store.

Even the Fox Base shorts, which can be had on sale for under $30 are better than going unpadded, imho. Regardless, just watch the clearance sales and you can always find a good deal on last year's color.
