i second the liner/casual shorts combo. if you find that they're too long and snagging the seat, just turn the top inch over on itself and- voila, you saved yourself $50-$100.

I do something like this. Find some on sale and then a put a shell over them. You can get a super nice pair from hammer nutrition for $40, which is very reasonable considering the quality. I got some Fox ones from the path for a pretty good deal, and picked up a really nice high end pair at performance for like 1/2 price because they were last years. Super comfortable. I think it's nice to be able to wash them seperately too, wash the shorts every time and the shell when your friends start to complain.

When I started biking, I just wore regular athletic shorts. Then I quickly switched to some lycra shorts that worked better, but didn't look so great. After that I went with the athletic shorts over the lycra, but that was bunchy and uncomfortable.

So around Christmas I was searching ebay for some deals on *new* MTB shorts that included a chamois. I found a local guy selling a pair of Fox Sergeant MTB shorts with a very low reserve. I was the only bidder, and ended up getting them for $40.00, about half of what they cost in a retail store. I picked them up from his house on Christmas eve, and had myself a pretty good Christmas present a day early.

I've worn them on every ride since, and have loved them. The chamois pad is amazingly comfortable and removable for washing. The length of the shorts is perfect, and the crotch don't get caught on my seat when leaning back while going downhill. They even have an adjustable waistband on the inside, which I learned on the Noble ride I need to adjust since I've lost a little weight lately.

In any event, I have nothing but good things to say about these shorts, and would strongly recommend them. They're comfortable, stylish, light, and have a great removable chamois. They even have a couple of nice sized cargo pockets I've kept my camera and some gel packets in on some recent rides. I'd like to get another pair, but can't justify the expense at the moment.

The 2007 model, which is the one I have, is on sale right now at Price Point for only $59.99. While I admit that this is still expensive for a pair of shorts, its still a great deal and I think they're probably worth it.

In my humble opinion, Oakley's mountain bike gear has no equal. Styling and bomb proof and headquartered right in the heart of the O.C.

Okay, so I forgot to mention it's expensive! Still, if you shop around online (particularly ebay), you can still get some smoking deals

I think the Oakley shorts suck arse. The price that you pay for those shorts and the stiching on mine is unraveling a;ready. I only had the shorts less than year. Ever since Oakley sold out to some Chinese investors the quality on Oakley is junk IMHO.

The best bet is to invest in some good Pearl Izumi and just wear some board shorts over the lycra.

Oh another thing about the Oakley shorts if your not 6-6 then your going to look like Michel Jackson wearing high waters. I have caught a few times my Oakley shorts on my seat, no fun.

NO!

I bought a pair of Fox shorts for $100 last year, and they ripped apart after two rides.

I have three pairs of Zoic shorts that I paid between $10 and $30 for that are still going strong, one pair is over 4 years old. BUYER BEWARE!!!

When I can find bike shorts, I buy them.... 28" waist men's bike shorts are hard to find in stores, and I'm reluctant to buy online. I did buy one pair on Ebay for $10 , and they're holding up well.

I've got the hoss ponderosa shorts (a few pairs).

They're not too bad, but the chamois compared to some of my tighter gear is not too comfortable. The only other problem I have is that the velcro part on one of the adjustable waist band things is all curled backwards (can't flatten it) and it snags on my jerseys when I'm riding.

My favorite pair of bike shorts are some nike 3/4 length tight lycra deals that fit perfect, and I figure they look more like rolled up tight pants than shorter road shorts do. They're also super comfy and never get snagged on my seat. I don't' mind wearing just the tight gear, and I don't mind other people wearing it, as long as the shorts are a reasonable length and not totally old and loose.

I can't stand wearing baggies over the top of road shorts, I just say get over the image and go without the outer layer.

I've got three pairs of the Fox High Frequency shorts and love them. Good chamois and comfortable. All three are at least one year old and I ride every day so they have definitely gotten some wear.

I have three pair of shorts and the fox pair is the only one that doesn't give you "turtle neck". I hate getting all bunched or rubbed. I say pay a little extra as that will probably go to R and D for the next pair.

Hoss makes great shorts and jerseys and don't rip you off in the process. The shorts are only $50

Their jerseys are only $30.

Sorry but you can't beat that.

Plus it's a local company that gives back to the mountain biking community!

I got my Oakley shorts on "steep and cheap" for $20 + $7 shipping.
Their sizing was a off, the shorts are just a bit bigger than I prefer, but for $27, I'll live with it.
Very nice shorts though...

I also have some Hoss shorts, like 'em a lot, but the chammois is not the best.

Default Fox Shorts

I have the 08 Fox Seargeant shots and I love them! Like quaestiones said, they are very comforatble and I have no problem getting back and forth over the seat. The chamois is removable for washing, or when done with a ride you can slip it out and have a cool pair of camo shorts to with no chamois riding up your a$$. I also have some 07 Mid Rangers and they work well too, but no removable liner.
