Default Pedal talk

Now that I've added a Pike up front and 5.5" rockers to the rear of my Spot, I find myself pushing the limits of my riding. I purposely go out of my way to find bigger chunk and attempt lines that I previously avoided.

Recently, I've found myself going down or nearly going down more so than in the past. I'm thinking it's time to move a pedal with more platform for those times when unclipping becomes necessary but staying on the pedals is still required.

Having had clipless for years now, I'm not quite sure if I want to go straight to flats or go with something in the middle. I'm considering something along these lines:

vs.

Pros and cons anyone? Thoughts?

Thanks for sharing!

Best of both worlds, I have been using the new 08 Mallet’s for a few months and they work great.
The new Mallet's have pins so you can use them as flats.

Oh yeah, I forgot about these. You're right, seems like a good compromise. Plus the red will help me Fo up my rig's color scheme

I had the Acids on my DH bike for a bit...really like them. They have a bit of a platform but not too much. Don't you think you'll lose some climbing efficiency if you go back to regular flats?

Have you tried adjusting the tension on your current pedals to see if that helps you get out easier?

Go with flats. Clipless pedals are a fad. The 50/50's are a solid pedal, but a poor design (I have em). Look for a pedal with a bit of a concave like these:

Flats!!!
Look for a pedal that will provide MAXIMUM destruction to your chin/calf area (if you were to "slip" a pedal).... They are grippier!

Then again, Mallet's aren't a bad idea either!

Glad I could help!

So is dual suspension

I'll only make one suggestion:

If you're going to clip in, clip in. Don't for one second think you'll have as much control standing on (even the best) platform or a "caged" clipless as you will with your foot mechanically attached to the pedal.

I ride Time pedals. I like the Z allot

. . .
Does that mean you ride with yer head between your legs?

I have had a set of Mentals since they came out and they are very durable. Every so often I add a bit of grease but other then that they are great. I did however put in smaller pins because the stock ones were way to long.

I have also used the Brooklyn ShinBurgers and the grip between the two pedals is equal but the Syncros are much more durable.

I second mtnbikerfred on Time pedals. They have worked much better for me than my Mallets.

What about the Atom Lab Quickstep? They're a real platform pedal that you can clip into. I happen to have a set I'd sell for cheap.

i have the atomlab's and platforms, been riding platforms for a few months now

What I'm going to start doing is switching depending on the riding i'm doing. it takes a bit to get used to going from clipped in to flats - climbing is a whole new experience! If I'm doing a lot of cross country & climbing i'm going to stick the clips back on

but yesterday i went to aliso and did minimal climbing (road to top of cholla, cholla and up 5 oaks, but it was great being on flats coming down lynx twice and down oaks (love that trail!)
