i personally like SRAM better for the current stuff. both shift great, but i prefer the feel of the sram shift pods. they're very crisp and the paddles are large and easy to find. i found the shimano stuff to have small shift paddles . plus, i dont like/need to have pull actuation for upshifts

Foo chime in. The previous post said you bought the X9.

(Dang it!!! I go in asking a simple question about compatibility and end up looking at a whole new drive train.)
I think you and I have the same bike (07 Rockhopper right?) Anyways I went from the stock Alivio RD with the shimano shifter/brakes to full sram x9 and it's been quite nice. So from someone who went down the exact (down to the same bike) path, go for it.

Instead of going with pricepoint see if you can go to your lbs to price match it. If they don't, go to adrenaline. Actually go to adrenaline anyways, awsome shop.

OK, now I'm convinced. I am rolling the Black 07 Rockhopper with the gray lettering. The x9's it is going to be.
I took the bike in for an imprompto tune up and its good that I did. The bottom bracket assembly was loose and I was about ready to bust a few bearings. The chain is about 100 miles left on it. So President Bush, I thank you for your stimulus Package and will upgrade some parts, that is, investing it back into the economy.
