Do the first. Not the second.

26er wheel in a 29er frame I think would lower your bottom bracket tremendously and the bike wouldn't handle well at all (I think).

Plenty of people build a 69'er or 96'er by putting a 29er fork on a 26" frame.

I've done both. I actually quite like the 26er in the back but you have to have a pretty steep head tube angle (And seat angle) to make it work well. (like 72 degrees HA, 74 SA)

Yes it will lower your bottom bracket so you have to be careful of pedal strikes. You won't believe how different the bike feels.

If you replace both wheels everything will be quicker on the bike. It will lean quicker, turn quicker, accelerate quicker, I even found it stops quicker. The only thing that wasn't quicker was my lap times. I got stuck on more rocks and tech stuff, and bounced around on more descents. I couldn't keep as much momentum around corners or maintain as high a top speed on the road to/from the trail.

Surprisingly it will still climb very well, assuming you don't lose traction. The secret is the blessing/curse of long 29er chainstays...but I won't get started on that.

I actually want to try out a 29er fork on the front of one of my 26" bikes. The only problem I have is that I don't have a spare F29 or Reba laying around. I already got the extra wheels.

You could get a cheap steel rigid fork from jenson or someone and throw it on your 26" frame. That's be a cheap way to just try it out.

Yeah, I've been thinking about doing this for my current SS but I don't have a spare 29er wheel.

Also, a 29" wheel fits in a Pace rigid fork made for a 26" frame. I did this for awhile while I was waiting for my 29er frame to get built.

It kind of makes the bike handle strange having that big wheel up there. The steering felt kind of dead and it really jacked the front end up. I'd almost say if you are interested in the whole 29 thing you just jump in with both feet and run 2 big wheels

if you do a 29er up front so it on a longger travel hartail frame if it was designed around 120mm you could put a reba on it set at 80mm and the head tube angle wouldnt change as dramaticlly but you would still be a little slack

26" wheeled biked are designed for 26" wheels. You either need.
  1. A 26" wheeled bike with 26" wheels
  2. A "Mullet" bike designed for a 29" wheel in the front and 26" wheel in the back.
  3. Or just the real deal and get a 29" wheeled bike with 29" wheels.
Over the years I have seen guys do some interesting things trying to convert a 26'er into a 29'er. The first 29'ers handled like crap becuase every yahoo with a torch was making "29'er frames" What they did was take the 26'er design and make it bigger
