Well I was dumb the other day. I was switching my eggbeaters to my platform on my SS since I had to commute to school. Well I forgot to completely screw in the pedals.
So as I was riding to class I looked down and realized that my pedal was halfway out. I was running late so I thought to myself that I can probably ride with it halfway out. Boy was I wrong. Well end of the day Im riding home and I noticed something weird on my pedals. Next thing I know my pedal drops out and I see pieces of metal on the threads. Not a good day for me. Well I brought it to the shop to see if the threads could be chased and as my luck would have it, I completely ruined the threads. So now its time for some new cranks. |

Unfortunatley when they are far gone there is no saving them. Heli coils are available but ar not a really good fix for most people. The left side will unthread itself as you pedal if it's not tight. Sometimes you can try to repair the threads and re install the pedal with blue loctite but it's usually a band aid fix at best.
Have fun looking at all the new cranks. Lots to choose from.

there are much better ways than a heli-coil....didn't check for left threads but great repairs are possible...your local bike shop is usually not a place for repairs...they will usually just sell you new parts...most of us are just looking for a good excuse to upgrade!! |

I tightened my first set of Mallets by hand several years ago because I couldn't get my pedal wrench around them. I got tired of doing this when I'd change to platform pedals periodically so I sent an email to Crank bros. asking them WTH was wrong with their pedals. They replied that as stated in the instructions the pedals require a hex wrench. But they said that they were happy to learn that their pedals stayed on for such a long time just by hand tightening.
