Default Speaking of Spokes ...

Anyone here have some wheels laced up with Marwi spokes?

I am about to lace up a new set of wheels but still need spokes. I have used CX-Rays before but this time I would like to toss some Ti spokes on but would like some feedback from riders who have used them.

Did they or are they lasting for you? How often, if at all, have you had to replace a snapped/broken spoke?

How much more flex are you noticing?

Cheers

I have not heard good things about ti spokes. I have had a little experience with ti spokes, and it was so so. I would not do it.

ti spokes are very light but brittle and flexy. I have built a few pair with them with mediocre results. they are also creaky where they rub on each other. I use dt revolution spokes butted 14/17 front and rear with alloy nipples. real light. I think I'd beef them up if running disc brakes though unless it was a high flange hub.

Flex is difficult to quantify when comparing one wheel to the next.

Because ti spokes stretch more than stainless spokes, you have to build the wheel with very high spoke tension. Because the spoke tension needs to be fairly high, it is more common to use brass nipples with ti spokes (which also partially defeats the weight benefit of the ti spokes). Additionally, some hubs don't play too nicely with the high tension.

Although a ti spoke prep is available, aluminum nipples may bind to the ti spokes because of electrolysis, which could create problems with future tensioning and truing.

Considering long-term performance, reliability, and serviceability, you're probably better off going with DT Revolution spokes and alloy nipples as stated above.

Thanks.

The brittle part is what I was more concerned with then anything. I my self am no where near being a weight weenie but thought a set of Ti laced wheels would be cool. Perhaps I will do it when I get some extra cash.

Most likely will stick with the CX-Rays for this set.

Cheers

Ti has it's place and IMO, MTB wheel spokes should never be one of them. It's so much more brittle when compared to stainless...
