Default Strange Flat: Can anyone explain this one?

So Im starting to descend Rock-it and BOOM, I blow my front tire. Part of the presta valve blew/ broke off. In 5 yrs of riding I have never seen this one.

I was riding my 29er rigid, front tire was about 28 psi, and Im about 205 w/ gear.

Im running new Flow rims and now I cant wait to put in the stans sealant and be done with tubes.

Can someone explain this one to me?

I've done that one once before. Pretty sure I bent the valve stem while removing a pump then it failed later that ride. Not a fun one at all.

Flows rock by the way, but the valve stem is just as fra-gi-le as the one on a tube. Ideally, you should still carry a tube, keep forgetting to myself.

I always assumed that valve stems busted when people were inflating their tubes. I guess I thought they were bending the stem somehow. BUT I KNOW that I am constantly knocking my spoke with small rocks. It seems like my tire catches the edge of a rock and it shoots up like a tiddly-wink--but with spin on it--so it flies back into the spokes.

Is it possible that this happened to you? And it hit your stem instead of spoke?

Just a thought...

definitely possible, I had about 10 rides on the tube.

Ive damaged many valves attaching a pump. It seems Im always breaking things and I cant even count how many bolts Ive stripped.

If it was in your pack for a while, it could have taken some damage or been bent in there.

it might have been bent or you might have had low enough air pressure for your tire to spin on the rim and pinch the valve

+1 this is what happened to me at the Fully. Bent valve stem equals kaboom.

Wink Actually, Grasshopper Dale....

This was caused by teegers. These are small lizard like green mottled things that hide in the bushes and tall grass along side of the trail. They have claw like fingers and sharp teeth. A lot of times riders think that they have been sratched by a branch... not so, it's teegers. They particularily like to mess with valve stems. Because of the recent amount of rain we've had, the grass is much higher, which makes them more brave. Please keep an eye out for them when riding ... they can ruin a ride.

I popped a presta valve on my road bike while I was inflating it. It caught me off guard, I thought I let the tube creep out from under the tire and it burst.

Could be that your rim tape need replacing. I was having this problem, but I was getting a hole at the bottom of the valve. Not sure, just a thought.
