Default Brake Pads wearing too fast!

My Avid BB 5's are just going through pads right and left.

I changed pads @ 500 miles and they were way overdue!

Now, after 250 more miles, the new pads are close to needing replacement!

I'm I just running the wrong brakes?
Are there better pads than the stock Avids?

Any advice other than "Go faster, brake less!" will be welcome!

The rotors are stock 6". No pics yet, but I would say that the rears aren't wearing evenly. Fronts are okay, or at least more even.

heavy riders on heavy bikes will wear out brakes faster. Also the type of rider / ride.

500 miles on a DH bike is much different than 500 miles on a CC bike.

Also are you using too much rear brake compared to the front?

you should check the alignment of the caliper to the pads. the way i aligned my bb7 was that i setup the pads so the rotors have minimal bend when engaged. since one side only moves, i moved the stationary side just about 1mm? so i can barely see the light between the pad and the rotor. the moving side, i just setup the cable to where i like the engagement point. i like my engagemnt when there is full lock when it is close to the handle bars.

i think that is just some general tips. but i think to get them straight, i would then lock the brakes and then release the caliper bolts. this should straighten the calipers out in realtion to the rotors. press it a few times and then tighten up the bolts again. this might help... but when people can see the pads there might be some better advice...

remember, calipers can moved in and out, and the pads can move in and out inside the caliper. it should be the same on your bb5...

+1 on the Kool Stop pads. Changed to them on my Juicy 5's and have about 500 miles on them so far. Good wear, good stopping power as well.

The only complaint - when they get wet. Sqeal like a pig, but most pads will as well.

+2 on KOOLSTOP but I would also recommend EBC Golds. Good power and last a long time.

another proponent of ebc's. reds will grip better, but wear faster. like DBD said, the golds should be well.....golden for ya.

I have some BB5 mechanicals and I have been burning through the pads at record pace. I think it is because of the riding conditions I have faced recently, though, that has done it...Long rides w/ long descents in wet conditions --- kicking up small mud/sand onto my discs. I think the mud is acting like sandpaper.
