Default converting to single speed..rear hub question

I have an existing set of wheels in good condition, with xt hubs. I believe they are three years old so 2005. Can I put a new cog on the back to convert to SS or do I have to buy a new hub? Thanks in advance!

just buy the spacer kit and slap a cog on and you're golden

It also depends on what kind of drop-outs you have.

Verticle will need a tensioner. Horizontal will require a through bolt conversion. If it's an EBB frame, no worries.

Thank you both, I have a horizontal drop out, so I will look into the through bolt conversion.

The through bolt conversion kit for Shimano hubs costs less than $20 and can be purchased or ordered at any LBS.

Hey PacMan, I went to my local bike shop and was asking them about the through bolt conversion and they had no idea what i was talking about. Did you mean I need to replace the quick release skewer? The mechanic said all I need to do is put on the spacer and cog kit and I would be good to go. Am I missing something? Sorry for the confusion.

you could send a pm to Seat Sniffer. He just converted one of his bikes over and might have some good input for you.

That is what I thought he meant. I am confused as to why. What is wrong with the quick release? Then if I get a flat on the trail I will need to unbolt the wheel

Or, you can get a Surly Tugnut. It's a chain tensioner for use with horizontal dropouts that comes with a reducer for QRs.

Jenson has them.

you get that hub sorted out yet? the thru bolt will stiffen up your rear (ha now there's a quote!) and the quick release will probably not hold tight enough and your rear wheel will start slipping in the horizontal dropout due to chain tension. if you carry a multi-tool with you you can make trailside repairs easily. you'll spend enough time getting your chainline and tension perfect, and to get partially into a ride and have your chain go slack, skip off the chain ring, your wheel go askew etc...arrgghh. get those thru bolts nice and snug.

If you can, try to setup your tensioner to "push up" rather than "push down". Pushing up will engage more teeth on the rear cog, prolonging life and reducing the chance of the chain skipping.

fyi on the YESS tensioner...keep it clean and lubed...the spring that tensions the chain gets dry and you'll start to experience chain derailment

I think you guys are referring to the pic from pinoiryder. I have horizontal dropouts so no tensioner needed......I think.
