Default Juicy 5 lever "trick"

Anyone notice how you can push your Juicy 5 levers outward and they click into a forward position-but they dont stay there. A shop I went to had a "trick" that locked the lever in the forward postion I was wondering...does anyone know the "trick". How do you lock the lever forward to get more bar clearance?

How about using the lever reach adjustment that is standard on the Juicy 5 brakes?

I tried it but it doesn't do the "trick". The lever still snaps back. Come on home shop heroes!

Read page 8 (or pdf page 5) of the manual http://sram.com/_media/techdocs/95.5013.109.000_A%20Juicy%203%205.pdf

Also, for better leverage and reach, you may want to move your brake lever about 3/4"-1" away from the grip.

If you want to do some other trick to jack up your brakes, I'm sorry that I can't help you.

It's not in the manual. It was done by someone at a reputable shop, but I had a caliper warranteed and it has the forward pop but the older one does not.

+1. push the levers inward on the bars so you can single digit the ends of the levers.

No. My front brake lever has the shop treatment- it doesn't push forward and the reach adjustment is not maxed out. The warranteed one needs the treatment to get the feel balanced. I have large hands and I need the extra clearance, Clarence.

I'm not sure what that shop's "trick" involves but it sounds like they could be messing with the pushrod and the plastic cup it sits in. When the lever is pushed forward far enough you'll feel it pop out of the plastic cup (probably a safety feature to keep the lever from pulling the guts out of the master cylinder). If it happens enough it may damage the plastic cup and interfere with the movement of the master cylinder piston, or possibly cause excessive wear to the cup where it will no longer hold the pushrod in place and you'll wind up with some freeplay in the lever before it engages the piston.

Here's a link to GMAT's worm gear installation. It's for his Juicy 7 but I believe it's still similar to the Juicy 5. It's quite informative and has great pictures:
http://www.cfht.hawaii.edu/~grant/Tu...t_Install.html

My guess (and it's only a guess since I wouldn't experiment with my brake in this way) is that they some how put something in between the pushrod and plastic cup to get the lever to immediately engage the piston from the full-forward position.

Again, these are just my thoughts and I personally wouldn't experiment with my brakes like this. The idea of not being able to stop my bike someday because of some mod that was done to it just sounds too painful.

Can you get the shop to show you what they did?
