I've been using these star-fangled nuts for many years on all my bikes (except those with carbon steer tubes). They've done there job as required 100% of the time. Best of all, they're cheap, and they often come with the forks AND headsets, so I always have spares. There is no need to try anything else, let alone spend money on gadgets that weigh more and cost more.

I have seen instances where they were not installed properly, which resulted in less than ideal performance.

yep, I agree they work great. And they're cheap, and light. I switched to HeadLocks after a nasty 30mph crash (experimenting with Stans sealant in the early days...) and the star nut pulled right out of the steerer tube - granted it was due to the crash. The 8 mile ride out with a wobbly cockpit left me yearning for a better solution.
