Default What's the deal with Ti springs?

So, lately I've been in the habit of spending a lot of money on my bike, so in the spirit of spending money (and saving weight), are ti-springs worth it?

I run a DHX 5.0 and wonder how they affect the ride and if the weight savings are noticeable.

Thanks

In most cases I believe that they are worth about a half pound

As J_Sims mentioned, they can be good for up to a half pound of savings. Of course, this depends on the spring length and weight rating. The longer and heavier the rating, the more weight can be saved.

What you can do is take your spring off, then go down to The Path (the only shop in OC that I know stocks a lot of Ti springs - I don't know the shops near Carlsbad), and measure the weight difference. Knowing that, you can calculate the cost of weight savings per gram, then you can consider other upgrades and calculate the cost per gram of those upgrades. After that, if you have the money to spend, and you want a lighter bike, then go for it.

Yes, losing weight does make a difference (I know how much better I feel when I'm 10 pounds less ). Whether or not you can feel it, depends on where the weight is located, how much you knock off, and how sensitive you are to how your bike performs.

Yes, you stay with the same weight rating (pounds required to compress the spring one inch). A rating is a rating, regardless of material.

It said that Fox springs have a high tolerance, so your stock spring may be slightly off from what it is rated.
