i go to ace hardware and get strips of what looks like clear grip tape (but isnt abrasive to cable housing). it is available in different widths, and you can buy it by the foot. it works great.

Velcro, or "hook & loop" as it's called in the textile industry. I see many people with the loop, or soft, side on their bikes. I've found the hook, or rough, side to be more durable and protect the frame more. You can find an array of colors and widths at places like JoAnn's fabrics, and Michael's has some pre-packaged.

for the plain clear stuff you could put it all over your frame and forks and helmet, there is the 3m stuff (scroll half way)

I put "non-slip" material on my drive-side chain stay (bought it at a marine supply store). I have used velcro but honestly, it gets dirty and then looks bad. It also tends to not be as sticky as the 3M non-slip decking material.

For clear protective tape, I bought a 6" x 25' roll at Autozone for about $25. And as mentioned, I also use the soft side of Velcro, especially on the chainstay and the seatstay near the cassette. Unlike the hard side of Velcro, the soft side also damps the noise from chain slap. I also sometimes use the soft side of Velcro in areas where cables may smack (not rub) tubes to reduce noise.

I've used Scotch tape and electrical tape. Both work ok, but electrical tape is rather unsightly. I might try the clear tape guero is getting at the hardware store.

They sell the protective clear strips in different shapre and sizes and most bike shops. Fox, THE, and a few other BMX companies make them specifically for frame protection and they work very well.
I use helicopter tape for the bigger portions of my frame. Helicopter tape is actually a stronger version of the product you'll buy at the LBS. It's used as an part of the abrasion strip that helps protect the leading edge of helicopter blades from debri so you know it'll stop those rocks from dinging your paint job. You can purchase helicopter tape at local airports that service helicopters and it's only about $25.00 for a roll. Go in with friends, it'll do about 20 bikes, and split the cost up. Hope this helps!

You can get 3m clear protective film at Wally World in the automotive dept - usually by the paint supplies.
