So most of you know I have had back problems. m worried that to hard of a seat will cause discomfort. What saddle would you recommend for comfort/health factor. Weight is not a issue really, but the lighter the better. I also don't want a big fat/wide seat.
Thanks in advanced

i love my sdg bel air rl. the reason why is the up slop on the tailbone section. i was on a wtb laser for a while and its a comfy seat but i felt like i needed something to hold me on the saddle better. its not an overly padded type of saddle but the shape and rear slope have helped me.

Specialized makes a nice saddle. I just got a Phenom and it's great.

You can always add a neoprene seat cover. It really helped me when I was doing the triathlon thing and riding 300-400 miles per week!! It really seemed to add to the comfort, but I am really not sure how much it will help your back. Good luck, I hope you find a good solution!
If all of these suggestions don't help you could always goto Olympic Gardens!! The "seats" there are SUPER NICE, and FIRM!!

Thanks, I am gonna keep track and see the most recommended and go that route.I figure 100 responses should yield a good choice. Not to sound critical, I just want to make a good choice. 2 for the Phenom.

Another one to take a look at is the Selle An Atomica. Although looks similar to a Brooks, it's completely different. It was developed for RAAM racers who spend a lot of time in the saddle. Although a bit heavier, it's the most comfortable saddle I've ever ridden on. Be glad to let you try mine out if you are interested:

Brooks B-17 Butchered. Absolutely love mine! Heavy as a tank but weight is a state of mind.

WTB Rocket V SLT on all of my bikes. I've tried a handful of saddles and have had good luck with the higher end WTB saddles.

I use a Specialized Avatar. You mentioned back problems. I had the same issue and found that I was too stretched out on the bike. I moved my saddle forward a touch and it made me sit up more and it helped. Probably have had a million tips sorry

Do not get a heavily gelled saddle or a soft saddle, for that matter. It might hurt a little till you get used to it, but a saddle with little cushion is much better for you. What happens with a soft type saddle is it works it's way to cutting off blood circulation. It will contour to your body and push against blood flowing viens, just what you don't want to happen. Eventually you'll start to get a numbing effect and then it'll become painful.
I personally like the Specialized seats, and went with one that says it has padding, but I'll be damned if I can find it. Still I've road this seat on both mountain and road and it has served me very well. I rode it for 15 hours straight last weekend and I still like it. In regards to your back hurting that is more to do with fit, then the seat style. In road riding you almost have to have a fit, in mountain biking your moving around quite a bit more so it's not as important, but I still would look into it.

I've been riding WTB's for almost 10 years. They seem to fit my butt bones pretty well. I've got a Lazer V on both my bikes (ti rails on Roger) They have just a bit of cush, but not so much as to give you monkey-butt. Serfas also makes a really fine saddle. I also suggest to look at the other things causing you back pain besides the seat.

I'm running a Kore Enduro I-Beam on my MTB and it's been working pretty good for long rides. I have the road version of the same saddle on my roadie.
