On suggestion from some of those here, I decided to try some Azonic A Frame pedals to replace my beat up Wellgo MG-1's.
First impressions, I HATE these A frames. They are no better than cheapie plastic pedals. My Wellgo MG-1's with half the pins ripped off were still way grippier than these. Upon casual investigation, it seems like the old A frames used the same pins that the Wellgo MG-1's did, and the new A frames use different pins with a fat split head. Old style http://www.cactusbike.com/images/bikecatalog/AZO014.jpg New Style http://www.thefixbikes.com/bikes/ass...GFEJEIPCGt.jpg The new style pins are HORRIBLE. But, since I've already used these pedals, and bashed them, I figured I'd make the best of the $60-70 bucks I already spent on them. Went to Home Depot today and got a bunch of 4mmX10mm pins to replace the new style pins. I'll let you guys know how it works out. So just a warning to those of you looking to replace your Azonic A frames or those of you thinking about them. |

Rode the Azonics in the past. Nice pedals.
I am fairly certain a trip to the Home Depot (for new pins) will make things all better. P.S.- I highly recommend MG-1's!!!! ![]()

I love my A-Frames. I've used then for quite awhile now. When they came out with the new pins, I found them to be even grippier. Coupled with 510's, I may as well be clipped in. To each his own I suppose.

First question: What shoes are you using?
Both those pedals look like they'd have too much traction! Previously, I wore an old set of Vans, and I found that even the cheesiest of pedals worked well with plenty of traction. I recently changed to the five10 shoes (or is that 5ten? or 5:10? whatever...), and I find that I often have too much traction with Shimano DX pedals and Sunline platforms. Over many years of riding, I've found very few platforms that offered poor traction. And usually, the poor traction was generally only experienced in muddy or wet conditions. Two thoughts: 1) Either your shoes aren't working for you, or 2) You're riding platforms as if you're riding with clip-ins (not used to platforms), in which case no pedal or shoe will really make a difference. If this is the case, it'll simply take time to adapt to riding with platforms. BTW, if you can not bunnyhop with platforms just as well as with clip-ins, you're either not used to platforms yet, or you don't know the proper technique, but that could give you an idea of where you are with the platforms. At the closing weekend in Mammoth, Dino had a rental bike that was missing nearly all of the pins on both pedals. And considering we were often riding in sloppy muck, it was very impressive that he was able to do so well with those pedals. That was an example of being adept with platforms.

I'm currently using trail running shoes, but will be upgrading to 5.10's soon.
Regardless of shoes, my Wellgo's gripped insane, including my current shoes. The only thing I've switched is to these new A-frames. I've been using platforms for years. I can bunnyhop just fine with platforms. With these new split pins, it feels like there is float in my pedals. LOL. I feel myself constantly adjusting my feet while I'm bombing down trails. It's crazy how anyone could even say these are any good. Maybe those 5.10 shoes are just that good. I'll keep you guys updated on whether or not the new pins from Home Depot will fix the problem. Loctite is drying as we speak. Pins were around $0.40 for a pair. I bought all the ones HD had. I need to hit up another one to get some more. I've replaced only the 4 main ones on each corner so far. |

I used my 5:10's for the first time with a new set of Specialized pedals and they are almost to tacky... Found it hard to move around at all... IMO the shoes ARE that good..

Trailer runners, or any running shoe for that matter, are not so good for platform pedals. The lugs on the shoes essentially space the rubber away from the pins. The fact that they worked well on another set of pedals was merely luck. By chance, more of the pins lined up with the rubber of the shoes. Shoes like 5:10s or Vans sit over and around the pins, which is why they work much better. I occasionally play on my bikes around the neighborhood, and all of my running shoes offer very poor traction compared to Vans or 5:10s.
Your extended pins may help, but it's doubtful it will be a significant improvement. Try some good riding shoes intended for use with platform pedals, and you'll be amazed at how well they work. I can assure you that once you try some good shoes, you'll love those A-Frames.

must be doing some late night updates to the site, I saw another pair of pedals that was about 4G's and when I refreshed it was a more normalish price

I don't think you are understanding what I am saying. With almost all of my shoes, the Wellgo MG-1's gripped AWESOME. I could even lift the shoe and the pedal would follow a bit.
IMO, a good pedal should be good regardless of the shoes, which the Wellgo's were. I'm just commenting on the fact that the Azonics are not in the same league as the Wellgo's in terms of grip. Will the Azonics work great with some $100 5.10 shoes? Probably. But so will most cheapie platform pedals. I'm just a bit disappointed that some people touted the Azonic A-frames as the best platform out there. They might have been with the old pins, but definitely not with the new pins in my experience. But hey, whats that saying about opinions and assholes? So take my opinion with a grain of salt. I'm pretty sure the Azonics will work just like the Wellgo's with these new pins. I'll have to let you guys know next week unfortunately though. I'm going to be snowboarding in Colorado. Don't feel too bad for me. Quote:

i think you'll like the pedals a lot better with the pins too. I have A-frames and I love them. The grip is amazing with my Vans shoes (i have to take my foot full off the pedal to reposition it. then it just stays)
from personal experience, i would recommend running the pedals without the pins that sit over the spindle, as it grips a bit better and is more comfy. possibly some shorter pins in those locations would work well too |

A good pedal shouldn't need $100 shoes to be good.
That's why I loved the Wellgo's.I'm definitely going to run shorter pins in the middle, because that is how the Wellgo's are. I love how I'm converting these A-frames into overpriced and heavier MG-1's. Awesome. |
