Conti Mountain Kings are on sale at Speedgoat for $28. Your choice, 29 x 2.4 or 29 x 2.2.

I just got in a set of Conti Mountain Kings from Speedgoat. Both tires are 29" x 2.4" and weigh in at 736 grams and 718 grams, respectively. I'll put them on my AIR 9 tonight and see how they run for the next few weeks. I don't think they will be truly 2.4" wide.

Sam why do you want really wide (heavy'ish) tires on that bike

For normal CC trails a 2.1 or 2.2 is more than enough.

I rode SJT last night on my HT with 600g 2.1's and they hooked-up great

Remember with the bigger hoops you have more contact with the trail

After trying 29er Motoraptors, Nanoraptors, Exiwolfs, Nevegals, Fast Traks, and the Captain, I have determined:

Nevegal is a great front tire, Nanos and Captains are great rear tires.

Riding down Blackstar, the Nano had a tendency to slip a bit when leaning during turns, whereas the Captain never does.

I had a Nevegal in the back for a while and when I put a Captain on there, I could not believe how much faster I was rolling. It felt like I had a tail wind everywhere. I didn't notice any lack of climbing traction either.

I do plan on giving the Rampage a try in the front this summer.

I think these 2.4s will be closer to 2.25" in reality. We'll see.

I like the increased grip of wide tires. I know the 29" wheels give me a bigger contact patch, but I don't mind an even larger contact patch with a wider tire, especially up front.

Also, the tread on the 2.4s looks deeper than the 2.2s, not sure why though.

I have been racing a 29er since 2006.
I've used one combo for every condition, course, etc. My results have been pretty good.
KENDA KARMA 1.9s for racing period.
From Sagebrush to Humbolt, from Sea Otter to the Santa Fe Big Friggin Loop, they are golden.
paz afuera
For training I love the Nevegal, and the Bonty XRs.

sam, i've had some 26" 2.4 MK ss on my trail bike for about two weeks and they're not too bad of a tire. the one issue i have with them is that the side knobs are very soft. i can see shredding the side knobs if you ride in rocky areas a lot. also the tire is pretty skinny for a 2.4 and the volume isn't really there as well. i should try and get some calipers to measure, but i'd guess its a 2.2/2.25 at the biggest. i'm testing it out since one tire saves me about 360 grams compared to my schwalbe big betty that i normally run.. it does roll fairly well and the grip is pretty good as well

Nam, what pressure are you running on your 26" Mountain King? Have you found a sweet spot for grip vs rolling resistance?

since i'm running the super sonic versions with paper thin sidewalls i'm running 35psi, these are 26" tires so i'm not sure what you would run the 29er version with the standard sidewalls.

please post this question in the 26" tire review thread.

gene or gouge or craig, maybe merge these threads since there are 29er tire reviews in the original Tire Review Thread...

As I said in the original post to start this thread, I know we already have a tire review thread, but I feel like we need a 29er-specific thread because there is currently a limited selection of 29er tires out there and not all 26" tires are available in 29" versions.

Most of what I read in the other tire thread doesn't help me when I am looking for 29er tires.

I would prefer to keep this thread separate.

Specialized Captain 29x2.00.

Ran it for the CC tubeless. Awesome tire. Rolls good, and brakes pretty well for such a fast tire.

Tubeless setup is on a Stan's Arch at about 40PSI for the race. No issues.

Try it, right now I think it's a probably one of the better tires to use in the back.

I like the Captain in the rear!

I test road a friend's Ventana El Rey yesterday with a WTB WeirWolf LT 2.55x29 tire up front and 2.3 in the rear and it felt really good. The problem with the WTB WeirWolf is that it clogs up with mud. It's a great summer tire. I think the Panaracer Rampage is not a bad choice for winter and summer riding. For only $23.95 sale price, the Panaracer Rampage 2.35 is not a bad deal. Here is the link:

I have enough miles on the Continental Mountain Kings 29 x 2.4" to form an opinion now. They are very cushy with tubes at about 32 psi and really grippy even up to 40 psi. They are not 2.4" though. Maybe 2.25" at best. They have tons of grip and soft tread. Rolling resistance is about average.

I really like the Mountain King as a front tire, but not so much as a rear tire.

At pressures below 35 psi, the Mountain Kings tend to throw gravel and twigs. The grip is great, but it is kind of weird to have pebbles fling into my chest from my front wheel. The tread is deep so it is not surprising that they can pick up gravel.

So yeah, I give them a thumbs up as a front tire and a thumbs down as a rear tire.

Now that is a good review

May have to give them a try

Rolling on 29" dubs!

i am 160 and i was running a rampage (23 psi, rigid fork) up front and a 2.1 nano in the rear (33 psi). great combo.

i tried running a kenda karma and small block 8 in the rear but those tires seemed to break loose quite often, which i hate when riding single speed.

the nano in the rear is still on of my favs....good volume and traction and fast rolling.

that said, i just set up a conti mtn king 2.4 up front the other day....gonna ride that this weekend. the tire has a tall sidewall profile, but it ain't as wide and you'd think. it is light though, for such a high volume tire.

for xc racing...a front ignitor/rear sb 8 set up would rock!

My current setup on the 29er SS is WTB Exi front and Nano rear.

Tried the Capitan in the rear(eh..some how this doesn't sound right) and felt it is a bit slower than nano but good grip. But I'm switching to Nano for the rear wheel and Capitan for the front wheel.

The Capitan is only 2.0 in rating but definitely larger than the nano which suppose to be a 2.1.

Rampage got great grip and very good volume but on hard surface it's a pig.

Oh I'm 6ft and 200lbs dry weight.

My SS is currently Weirwolf LT front and Exi rear. This setup works really well and rolls quick for big, high volume tires. I also run Rampage front and rear which is just great. They will more than likely go back on soon just because of how much confidence they inspire. The wife has Rampage front and Ignitor rear. She does not like the Maxxis though. Just our .02

Cheers,
Andy
