Default If I was building my first wheelset...

CK hubs, 355 29er hoops, Wheelsmith spokes and nipples...

Would I be headed in the right direction?

sounds like a good build to me.

how much do you weigh? riding style? strictly xc? drops? all mountain or trail rider?

what kinda bike?

also, don't count out sapim spokes. sapim cx-rays and race spokes are really good stuff. wheelbuilder.com has good prices and great service if you chose to go sapim.

XC trail rider. Occasional beginner class race. Never big drops. Considering the Voodoo Canzo 29er.

I still think you should consider Arch rim's for longevity. Our next "race" wheelset will probably have the Sapim's. They were recommended over the Ti spokes

Oh ya, if money is no object, Aerolite's, no?

CK hubs will NEVER be the wrong direction. Have you considered Industry Nine hubs? Using their hubs with the aluminum straight pull spokes is supposed to yield a stiffer wheel. It may be what the doctor ordered for 29ers. Just something I've heard.

i would go with stan's arch rims. atleast in the rear. up front, arch or even a flow.

355 would be alittle too skimpy for your weight and riding style. it is good for a feather weight xc/smooth style rider like myself.

as for hubs....kings are great. but, i would strongly recommend the i9 j-bend spokes. yes...i9 makes hubs for regular spokes i think they are abit cheaper than kings too!!!!

as for spokes....wheelsmith db 14/15 or sapim race 2/1.8/20 would be fine. 32 hole, 3 cross with brass nipples will do you right!!!

good luck!!!

Why the i9 hubs over CK hubs?

sorry to hijack but since we're on the subject of building wheels i'm specing wheels i'll be happy with for quite some time. unfortunately i'm on a budget and cant' get the blingin deemax or fr2350 laced to king hubs so i've been thinking about this setup:

DT Swiss FR6.1d rims
Hope Pro2 hubs
DT Swiss comp spokes
DT Swiss standard aluminum or brass nipples

i'm not well versed in the spokes and nipples but according to my riding style i would like strong ones...weight is not an issue. these wheels will be riding downhill, freeride, and mountain cross both in and out of competition. also thinking about going tubeless UST, but i may do this the cheap way by way of conversion. also, 36 vs. 32 hole wheels? pros/cons...fill me in!

feedback is appreciated. thanks.
