During the winter I fully wash every 1-2 wet rides (up to the bike condition), I the rest of the year I mostly use dry wipe and very occasionally wash.

once you ride enough you'll get a feel for how often you should 'pmcs' your bike. depending on the time of year and how often you ride, this will affect your 'pmcs'. some people are more routine about it than others. for me, i will always clean my drive train with a brush before or after every ride and reapply my chainlube of choice. i make sure the cassette and pulleys and chainrings are clear of any residual gunk. as far as the frame and fork, i wipe them down with a damp cloth/towel (for cleaning).

this was just a brief reply, hopefully it gave you some insite. btw, its never a good idea to use a high powered stream of water to wash your bike.
