Default why kyle strait?!?!

uhm so i came back from lunch and admired my beautiful bike, when i see a puddle of oil. the oil i see is dripping from my fox 40s i recently purchased(used).

so uhmmm. i have this lil race that i wanted to do, and uhmm, i dont want to cancel it, would it be ok to ride it, apparently not all the oil has come out, cause i took it off my truck and tried it out and it felt normal.

"rebuilt" usually means the top end seals, cause that is the "normal" service.

i could be wrong but i dont think it is normal for the fork to be leaking oil from the damp adj.

Maybe you only need a new crush washer on the botton nut, then drop the lowers, drain the fluid, and then add fluid. Worst case, you may need to rebuild the cartridge. I bet it's the crush washer, though. I just did mine, and I reused the old washers...I suspect it's going to leak soon.

Although it could also be a rubber o-ring on the inside of the nut...my memory is a little faded, so I'm not sure if this is a possibility.

The quick and dirty hack fix if it is the crush washer is to remove the nut, and thoroughly clean everything and reassemble it with some kind of gasket sealer (such as Threebond 1104). Let it dry for a couple hours before filling the fork with fluid. Then remember the next time you drop the lowers you'll need new crush washers.

its just weird cause, ive ridden it about 4 times now, each time ive never noticed oil leaking (and i would). this last time the only thing that happend was i bottomed out the fork, once. it wasnt to rough, or at least not on me. didnt hear anything different.

so possibly the crush washer. i need to pull up a parts diagram and check it out.

Unless it's the cartridge, the oil in the lowers is for lubrication purposes only, so a little more or less is ok. In fact, Fox's service instructions are poorly written; in one place it says to fill up each side with 40 cc of fluid, and in the specs it says 50 cc.

BTW, if it's an RC2, it could only be a crush washer to blame, if I recall correctly.

Leaks can begin at any time, so it's not unusual for it to happen after use. It doesn't indicate that it was poorly assembled (or likely not), so I wouldn't blame the previous owner. My new Totem is also leaking from the bottom area, but I haven't inspected it yet.
