Default ahhh geees.

well, i rode SR yesterday with some of you STR members. some of you may recall (especially todd "destroyer") that my rear brake was making alot of noise, but wasnt working. well aparently that little symptom leads to brake mount failure. i went to jump across (from one side to the other, not from lip to landing) the last jump on the 4x course. oh yeah, i landed it, but as soon as i pulled the brake, SNAP. tangled in the rear wheel and layed it down, i almost had it. anyhow, damage: totaled rotor, totaled mount, lost 3 spokes, front lever/perch was made ugly, notched the upper stanchion, and took a small chunk out of my swingarm. i called cortina almost immediately after it broke, and they sent it out. i should be getting it today (i love this company). i also decided to go from an 8" rotor to a 6". i assume this will reduce the stress that this mount encounters, extending its life, especially because an 8" rotor adapter sits so far away from the frame. heres a picture of what broke.

Wouldn't a larger rotor and longer caliper adapter put more stress on that part of the frame? My thinking is a longer lever arm can generate greater torque with the same force.

yes, it does put stress onto the frame (thats why im going with a 6" instead of an 8"), but first that energy needs to be transfered through the CNC'd mount. the mount is what failed. 80% of my braking is done in the front anyhow, i wont notice the stopping power of the 6" vs the 8"... speaking of, look what i just got! cortina rules.

What is that? Is that a way to put discs on a non-disc frame?

The mount and the frame are essentially subject to the same torque vector from braking. The mount would have more stress on it too with the 8" rotor in place of the 6", that was my point.

its the brake mount. cortina designed it to interface with the swing arm, and to be a wear part, apparently. heres a backside shot of it. the other side is the sameway, but has the threads for the axle, and the der. hanger on it.

not a fan of the "adjustable wheelbase' design.

That part should not have sheared. Looks like the decorative milling/machining on it weakened it.

true, i was thinking the same thing, but it didnt break where any of the machining took place it broke closer to the bolt hole.. im pretty sure i know what happened. i used it at skateparks alot, and supposedly reverse braking forces weaken this part.

i love this bike. if you look at the wiki site Brewmaster linked, mine is the avalanche team bike (DHE-8, i love its suspension linkage, no need for the floating brake and its progressive, i sit at 45% sag and never bottom.), minus the fork. i personally like the adj. wheelbase, but im biased. lol.

I guess Wiki is their proxy website right now since the Cortina homepage is empty.

yeah, they had a homepage for a while. should be up soon, but they seem busy with making new stuff, most importantly incredible shock and fork upgrades for the internals.
