Default Trigger/Der. compatibility

Is it possible to run shimano derailleurs off of sram triggers and vice versa? I'm guessing the answer's no, but i've heard of people running mixed drivetrains so I figured i'd ask.
I just like my sram triggers better than the shimano ones, but have an almost new xt der. sitting around that i could put to use. I'm figuring the 1:1 ratio doesn't allow them to be compatible, but if anybody could chime in on this i'd appreciate it!

I'm currently running an XTR front derailleur with x9 shifters. Didn't have any problems on Sat. Also I think an x9 r. derailleur, SRAM cassette, XTR chain..

Short answer: Front yes, rear no.

EDIT:
As dubjay said you might like the new M770 XT shifters. I recently switched to them from LX shifters and they can be picked up for under US$90 locally.

You can mix/match SRAM/Shimano front shifter/derailleur. The rears need to be from the same brand - however, SRAM did make Attack shifters that are Shimano compatible.

If you like the way the SRAM shifters work (using thumbs for both levers), take a look at the 2008 Shimano XT shifters. They work the same way.

You can run a SRAM "Attack" rear shifter. These use the same actuation ratio as Shimano. Check some web outfiters, you can usually find them sold separately and not too expensive.

Like these.

You can also use these adapters from Jtek to use Shimano derailleurs with SRAM shifters: http://jtekengineering.com/shiftmate_straight.htm

If you want to do some funky stuff with 10-speed road components, go here: http://jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm

I've read about people having a lot of success using these adapters.

Thanks for the quick responses!
Guess it's more do-able than i thought. I'll try running my front der. off the sram triggers tonight and see how it goes.
Probably will just end up picking up another x.9 or something for the rear. Those converters from jtek look pretty cool and would make sense if i had an xtr to put on, but to run an x.9 it would be close enough in price to be a wash.

I'll have to check these out, since it is the thumb action of the sram's that i dig

Good luck Tim.

Front dérailleurs are all black magic and voodoo. I need a good witch doctor to set mine up, but I can't afford the live goat he would have to sacrifice to the front dérailleurs gods.

I have seriously considered 1x9 because I hate tuning my front dérailleur.

That's why Justin runs 1x9! He put a fr. derailleur on my Canzo and didn't want to touch it.
