Slime is great, until you actually have to use it. Which is as soon as you get anything larger than a thorn. Then it's the nasty-sticky-green-death-spiral, followed by changing-a-nasty-sticky-green tube. If something makes it way in between your tire and slime filled tube you're really SOL. Now you have some evil tube killing object (ETKO) stuck somewhere inside your tire with nasty-sticky-green-stuff. Naturally the ETKO will kill you remaining spare tube. Now you're walking back to the car in your spuds.

Did "The Blob" traumatise you as a child?

Your point that Slime doesn't prevent every possible problem is undoubtedly true. But your scenario is goofy. Use a rag! Slime is not sticky, ugly, but not sticky.

Not sticky?! Exactly how do you think it works?

I have had the opposite experience of ghixon. I run stans on all my bikes and i used to run Nevegals and I would constantly tear the sidewall or just at the point were the rim and tire meet and the stans wouldn't seal the tear.

I started running Maxxis Minions and Highrollers and have had no issues. And since running stans with Maxxis Minions/highrollers I have not had a flat on the trail.

I ran Stans conversion kit on my Spinnergy wheels with Kenda SB8 and it worked great..rim strip and all. It did however take a little longer to get all of the micro hole in the tire to seal. After that no problems at all. I have since bought a set of No Tubes wheels and Kenda SB8 for XC racing and still no problem.

This is a hard topic. I have a hard time giving advice on this topic. Stanz can be a performance advantage. it can be more reliable than tubes at a sligtly lighter weight. You can also run into all kinds of problems during setup, or riding including tires blowing off the rim while riding. The tuff thing is that just because a specific tire/rim setup works for one person, it does not mean it will work for the next person. In fact, one can get different results with the same tire and rim combo. It's always an adventure when your tire is dead and you have to put a new one on. Non UST tires are not very consistent when it comes to how the beed fits the rim. I have had customers hate me because I sold them Stanz, and I have had customers love me for it.

I still use Stanz conversions on some of my bikes. After years of experimenting, I think stanz is good for me on xc type trail bikes. For really agressive riding, I prefer UST.

I am very excited about the posibility of more tires with UST beads, but normal casings. We all run sealant in the UST tires anyway, we don't need the extra weight that makes them leak proof. The UST bead is what we need to avoid blow offs.

I use UST Nevegals(thicker side wall then the light tires but thinner then DH) w/ thorn tubes and deal w/ the extra weight and don't get pinch or needle flats ....When I had presta tubes I had stem leaks all the time so I went back to shrader...no problems since....

I've never tried a tubeless system and have no desire...I'm with the weight and NO MESS if something happens on the trail...

+1. I believe Dino mentioned the samething to me in a off-thread discussion. It's either Kenda's or Stan's website that recommends against it(don't quote me on that). If you are wondering what tires Stan's recommends to use or avoid, check here:

http://www.notubes.com/support_tire.php

I was looking to drop weight and increase traction but decided that lightweight tubes pinch flat too easily, I don't have UST rims, and SLIM/Stans is a pain in the azz/messy (no offense to those who use it, but if I did have UST rims I would try). I ended up buying a different set of tires to decrease weight and I'm sticking with my standard tubes.

Well, when I put a drop on my finger and kinda roll my finger against my thumb, I notice that the green liquid has these little white boogers of varying size. I think that these boogers migrate through the liquid towards a leak and seal it the same way debris dams naturally occur in streams. This actually wouldn't work if the Slime were sticky and didn't allow the boogers to move.
