Well, I'm torn. I have to think about it more. Once you start getting parts one at a time the over all cost starts getting out of hand.

It does cost more but it's much more fun, especially knowing your bikes has all the parts YOU wanted.

agreed...the problem with building up a bike is that while in theory it can be cheaper......if you are like me and buy one part at a time, you lose all concept....when focusing on a single part you say, "yeah, whats another $100 for a better part".....yeah, for a single part is no big deal I suppose but I end up applying that rationale for each and every part and NEVER stay close to my planned budget which if i did yeah, would be a relatively affordable bike....guess i am just a failure

Look for a good build kit that will get you most of your components. Then get a nicer set of budget wheels like a XT hub with Sun rims, or WTB Laser Disc for a bit more. Focus on a nicer rear hub more so than front. The front hub really doesn't do all that much. Remember things like seat post, stem, handlebar, and headset are really not going to improve performance and can cost for more than needed. As always look for used stuff for non-wear items. People turn over all kinds of stuff with a high degree of frequency just because they didn't like it even though it is perfectly functional.

for sure it does. you almost want to buy a complete bike just so you can get a lower entry cost and then upgrade as you go.

not really....I find that when I build up by parts, and obsess about each part choice, I end up with the perfect build not needing further mods.

compromise and buy complete, the updgrade costs and lack of content, results most often in a higher net cost than had u cherry picked all parts from get go. besides, I am a bike/part snob so no way do most of my favorite stuff come on pre-builts anyway so yeah, if like me, off the shelf a horrible idea from both a cost and satisfaction perspective

totally understandable and I would do the same. some though arent as fortunate and have to feed and clothes little ones so if you buy in on the "cheap" and upgrade as you go it doesnt trigger the finance meter detector if you know what i mean.

lol....dude, I know what you mean for sure!

I have a wife who just started working this month after being a singe income for 11 years....4 kids in private school, and a gheyazzz mortgage so yeah, I'm hip to the finance meter. problem is my addiction makes me do things that may get me b-slapped by the wife. for example, my latest purchase of frame is unbeknownst to the wife still....usually I can pull it off but this one is concerning since frame replacement is a totally different color so there is a high probability wife will notice. I will probably have frame shipped to el salts house till I figure out a plan.

The problem here is that it's my third bike. I can't spend $1600 or I would just go drop it on a new Felt, or Stumpjumper 29er. I went to Jaxx today and I hate to say it but that place is always dissapointing. They seem more interested in selling beach crusers. (no offence stoners) [haha, I called people with beach crusers stoners] {just joking, I have one too} I called earlier in the week and some guy was telling me all about the 29ers they had from 07 on sale for $890. When I got there they suddenly didn't have my size. They could however order me the new 08 for $1400. I know it's a better bike but how bait and switch was that?

So I'm leaning towards this...

The specs seem good, way good for the price, and really I can swap out lighter wheels later or maybe a new fork. Everything else seems fine for some fun xc riding. Plus I like the color. When I think back a few years to when I would take my rigid from 1989 down the same trails I do now I realize this is all you need. I mean, 7" of travel is fun but when do you really NEED that? DH racing? Sure.

Get the fully built bike and use the parts until they wear out, you get your IRS check, or the break.
