Default How do I remove a baseplate from a fork without scratching it

What is the right way to remove a baseplate from a fork without scratching it, it’s a Chris King Headset, I just sold my 5 Spot frame and I included the Headset in the deal.

you need a flathead screwdriver, a hammer, some way to hold your fork upside down and some patience.

set up the fork upside down in a vice/clamp/whatever- it's just got to be really stable.

basically, you hammer ONLY a few taps at a time on the BOTTOM of the race on the front and then the back. some forks actually have a little recess to aid in this process.

this method has worked well for me for a long time. if you're wanting to be extra careful, throw some masking tape on the crown

I think park has a tool that does this. will go look...

edit: super bitchin looking tool: http://www.parktool.com/products/detail.asp?cat=50&item=CRP%2D1
zero idea on price

I asume you mean the bottom race.

Slowly working your way around.. I have a brass drift pin I use. I've seen many use screwdrivers. After you get a little space you can pry it off with a screwdriver.

You can also use a brass punch that wont ding it up.

True, I have to buy new punches and a brass hammer every few months.

Thanks for all the advice, I chickened out and decided to take it to my LBS, I don’t want to chance it, I got a quote of $5 to remove the Race, I’m also trying to sale the fork and don’t want that scratched.

By the end of the week I will post photos of the Fork in the Marketplace plus a few extras.
