Default 2009 Fox Forks - Another standard...

When I had originally heard rumors of Fox going to thru-axles for 2009 for their 32 forks, I was excited as I thought the Talas 140 forks would go 20mm.

I got a peek at their 2009 catalog yesterday, and it looks like they are creating a new standard instead.

Instead of 20mm, they've opted to go with what they call their QR15 (15mm) system. This is to be paired with Shimano's E-axle hub (whatever that is).

I had originally used Hope Pro II's in the front so that I could convert between QR and 20mm, but now another standard??

guess is Hope will come out with new cups for their hubs. Too bad Fox didn't create a new "standard" fork to run wider hubs

I have to ask..........any new 29'er forks?

I wish Hope would get on the ball and make a 9mm thru-bolt adapter...

Anyways, it looked like the F29 remains the same for 2009. (80 and 100)

Another thing to note (going off memory here). I believe there's a new color for most of the forks too. White being primary and titanium being an option? Or is it the other way around?

Sorry..getting older - memory not what it used to be.

Wow. Interesting. 20mm is too robust for the 32 platform? Maybe hub designers will be more like Hope and offer multiple options: QR, 9mm bolt, 15mm t/a, 20mm t/a, maverick, specialized... Did I miss anything? Yikes.

and I bet there will be aftermarket adapters made so you can still use a QR.

I actually like the idea. Less burly than a 20mm. Stiffer than a QR. There was definitely something missing in between. 9mm bolt or DT RWS seemed like an attempt to address that. Probably not for everyone but I'm looking forward to checking it out. Not looking forward to having to build a new wheel...

Actually, I believe Fox will still have their normal QR versions.

As for a 135mm fork - get this one here.

http://www.surlybikes.com/pugsley.html

Just run a rear hub on it and you're good to go . j/k

A 135 would make a pretty stout 29er rim though.

they made a 135mm it would be closer to what the 110mm was before disk brakes.

Default rumors

I heard that Fox, Rockshox, Marzocchi and Shimano are all working together on this new standard. I think that we may be seeing a move away from conventional qr slewers on mountain bikes. This may be the part of a transition towards through bolts for most bikes designed for any aggressive riding. QR skewers may be like V brakes soon. I think the fork manufacturers want to get away from open drop outs for liability reasons.

Having a qr flap is so old school roady xc. Most of us carry tools anyway. The bikes look cleaner without a qr lever, it's safer and stiffer. I like the idea. In many cases it is actually lighter too.

Really, some kind of thru-axle design is long over due for a new standard to secure front wheels. The old quick-release design did not take the forces involved with disc brakes into consideration. And I'm sure the fork manufacturers have had enough lawsuits of front wheels moving in the fork because of these forces.

I personally welcome a new lightweight design for properly securing front wheels with disc brakes.

As long as they're making a new hub standard, this would also be a great opportunity to make the hubs wider to space out the flanges so stronger front wheels can be built. This could significantly improve one of the shortcomings of 29ers. hmm....

Story is that RS isn't onboard with the 15mm, but are planning on offering 20mm on shorter lighter forks....

With you there, I need the help I can get in keeping the front wheel going in a straight line, and I've experianced my front wheel departing my fork....not pretty!
