Default Disc brake recommendation.

I just found out yesterday that my rear rotor is bent pretty badly. So I'm thinking of replacing it, but I'm not sure what I should replace it with. Does anybody have any recommendations? Also keep in mind that I don't have unlimited funds, so it has to be something that's a reasonable price.

Keep the brakes you have and just buy a rotor. That's the cheapest way out!

What brand of brakes are you using? Pricepoint has quite a few aftermarket rotors for a reasonable price anywhere from $11.98 to $29.98. Pricepoint shipping isn't the cheapest but they are local (Gardena CA) and the UPS ground usually arrives within 2 days.

They're the stock brakes that came with my bike, I'm not sure I'll be able to find a replacement rotor for it that easily. They're Hayes MX4 mechanical disc brakes.

Any semi-competent mechanic should be able to straighten a rotor.

Don't replace the brakes unless you're willing and able to buy a pretty OK set of hydros.

Just about any bike shop should be able to repair or replace your rotor. If they can't, that's a good sign it's time to look for a new shop.

Your bike has 6 inch rotors. You can get those cheap.

Good answer. Not sure, but I'd guess a take-off would run you $20 or less. But first take a shot at gently straightening your current rotor. If it's a slight bend, it's not that hard to do.

On the Saturday ride, Dino Brown was looking at my bike and said that it was bent pretty badly, and that it might be hard to straighten.

I said get a crescent wrench and give it a try (I did straighten it a little). If that doesn't work, you can have my old one.

I don't see how you can straighten a rotor well enough with a crescent wrench. There seems to be less than 1mm clearance between the pad and rotor. Any little runout and you're dragging. Heck, the brakes start to drag if the rotor gets wet.

There is no smoke and mirrors here. It is done frequently with great success. After you get pretty close to straight, and heat them up a few times, they run pretty damn true. The only ones I haven't fixed were banged on rocks and were badly damaged. Sometimes not having the bolts evenly torqued can cause a little warpage. Just re-torquing them and "riding them in" will often straighten them out. The disc "wants to be straight again"

Mech's with only one moving pad can significantly bend a rotor if you heat it up alot on a downhill and the static pad is far out of adjustment
