For the second time in 4 months, I have sliced the sidewall of my tire. The direction of the slice is horizontal. About 1/4" in length. Razor thin cut.
I am kinda' bummed. I threw away a perfectly good tire a few months ago (FEAR of tire failure). My current tire has only a few rides on it. I don't want to throw away another perfectly good tire. I also don't want to endanger myself. Should I patch the tire or throw it away? ![]()

I just patch mine on the inside with a piece of old tube and rubber cement the heck out of it/ Or an iron on rubberized denim patch will work too. Maybe it matter if its tubeless?

Trash it! It's not worth it especially on the sidewall. It wouldn't be a slow leak.

I ran a 2.5 Blue Groove with a inch slice in it for about a year. I used a tire patch on the inside, never had a problem or worried about it.

Hey Dino,
What tire are you running? Maybe the sidewalls are too thin. Perhaps try a different tire? That being said. You can clean out the cut, apply some Crazy Glue then either patch it with a tire boot (like this http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=5412) or use a tire patch (like this http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=5412). It should be fine. I would go with the tire patch though. They are more malleable and would take the repeated deformation better. You can also use a regular tube patch I suppose. I've never tried those before. I've had good luck with the tire patches in the past. Although, I can't remember if I've ever used them on a sidewall though. Duc |

Thanks for the input!
The tires in question are Panaracer CINDER's. While not the lightest tire in the world- I really like the way they handle! Both sidewalls were sliced on the finest (Yucca?) needles that the San Gabriel's had to offer! They also dug into my leg. I have a (2) new tires (one of which is a Cinder) in the garage. I will probably patch the tire and wear it down riding The Loop. For rides that I need peace of mind, I will slap on the new tread. Thanks for looking out for me Mechmann! I will get rid of the Horse as soon as I find something better!

I think it would be safe to patch it up, being that tires on bikes don't just blow like car tires and the worst that would happen is just a flat tire.I pretty much use DH tires ( heavy) but I get few flats.

I assume that it's not a UST tire. But if it's only 1/4" cut, I'd simply put a regular tire patch on it and run it with a tube.

DINO you have to go over those rocks not arround them problem solved. PS those are yuccas in th gabes. Otherwise i wouldnt patch a sidewall and trust it on that type of tire, fully would be cool.

Boot it up, or just duct tape it. It should be fine.
Are you sure this is not retaliation from Hugh or one of your other mortal enemies? |

Assuming you are not riding tubeless, you can also try Gorilla Glue (on the outside) on the cut. That stuff is super strong.

It must be him!![]() Ricky, we need to hit the Gab's someday. You would love it. A lot of those rocks you "can't" go around. Lots of square edge hits to the rim and tire! Thought pinch flats were the cause of a few flats. Nope- Yucca! For those who ride the Gab's bring a few tubes... You may need them! ![]()

When riding in Utah with some locals (Goose and other places) we noticed they all had patches on the side walls of their tires. Those rocks can really tear things up.
They used really good tube patches inside and outside and said they never have a problem. |

I think its the fault of your bike.
It heard about you fondling/siting on other bikes and now it wants revenge. Hell hath no fury like a bike scorned... |

I've used canvas/tent repair kits (from surplus stores etc) and sewn the sidewall back up all neat and nice like, then gooped or patched the inside and viola!
I used a rolling stich on each end first to stop the split and then a criss-cross in the center to get it all closed up. I've even enterainted the idea of having a boot repair shop sew 'em for me but...passed as I'da felt like a dork walking in with a bike tire. Worked for me on my Kenda Quick 1.7's and Pana 1.8's. |

If the tires were installed on an I.H. flats will never happen. They instantly become bullet proof.
![]() Maybe run Kevlar like another person mentioned on this thread and possibly thorn resistant tubing if you can bear the weight consequence? |
