Default Foo's SS Project Progress Report

Well as some of you may or may not have read...I have fallen into the dark side and attempting abuse myself by building a 2nd bike. A 2nd non-geared bike

At first I picked up the Marin B-17 HT frame from Neil at Adrenaline Bikes but then as I was waiting for all my donated parts to come in I got to thinking what Neil mentioned about a "dedicated" SS frame...it's just visually clean. Although my intent was to go 1x9 if I was truly digusted w/ the SS...I changed my mind and decided to go balls to the wall and go w/ Jenson's 660Ebb 26'er HT SS Frame in Gloss White!

I managed to sell almost all of my RC car parts to come up w/ a budget of $400.00 to build this bike up. With the help and the generosity of STR members like Neil, J_Sims, my coworker, .8down, and my Father-in-Law it has made this project doable without Mrs. Foo coming down on the Foo man hehe

Ok money and parts round up:
Zion 660Ebb 17" Frame White $179
Zion Seatpost and headset spacers: $15
Mavic 317 wheels/DT Swiss Nipples and Spokes/XT 6 Hole Disc Hubs $156
Odi grip clamps: $16

Donated parts and used purchased parts:
Saddle - Free
Stem - Free
Bar - Free
WTB Tires Frt/Rr - Free
Manitou 100mm Fork - Free
Hayes Hydro Disc - Free (pending the arrival of his Hopes)
32T Middlering - $5 and a box of chocolate chip cookies (Thanks Neil)
Azonic seat clamp - Free (Thank you again Neil)
Truvative Stylo Cranks - Free (Thank you J_Sims)
Shimano 747 pedals - $20 (Thanks Waldo and Xhusker for not buying them )

The Following were purchased from Adrenaline after I returned the Marin Frame:
SRAM SS/BMX Chain
ODI clamp on grips
Shortened chainring screws
Ritchey rim tape
Ritchey headset
Atomlab 19T cog/spacer kit
2 Innertubes

I really want the On One Mary Bars but that'll have to wait till I can get some more fundage.

Anyway, the bike is somewhat complete, I mounted the tires onto my nice wheels and secured the chainring onto the cranks, mounted the cranks and removed Jeff's pedal and installed mine (Jeff I got your peds bud whenever you need them i'll have them for you). Then I installed the chain, having the Eccentric BB really helps with getting things all lined up. Take a look at the pics the chainline isnt too bad.

Can't wait for the forks to arrive this Wednesday so I can at least see it with both tires on the ground. Thanks again to all my friend on STR for chipping in and helping me on this build.

A little red "FLARE"

**********PART 2, SS Saga Continues**********

Ok we're 90% complete now. I got my donated Manitou fork today and had some fun installing that sucker. I ended up having to take the fork and the lower bearing race to Performance to have them jam the race down the steer tube and seating properly.

Then when we got home and I started the install, the steer tube turned out to be longer as it came from a Large Trance frame and this is a medium. My pipe cutting tool broke so I had to bust out w/ the elbow grease and hacksawed that puppy LOL good work out.

Got the clamps for the Odi grips today w/ my gift card so the red will go w/ the chainring bolts

Here's the donated Manitou fork...it's a Coil spring fork should be interesting as I havent ridden on a coil spring fork in a while

I have to get some vice grips to remove that last V-brake post

Here my littlest one is learning to wrench now

Bad bad pipe cutter

So I had to resort to a little elbow grease

Here it is, 90% complete...just waiting for disc brakes now

Took it for a quick spin and I noticed that i'm a bit upright feels like my Epiphany I thought maybe i should be more laid out but I guess not...maybe I can swap out some of the headset spacers to lower the stem or flip the stem around. I'll have to play with it. Anyway on the initial shake down she was great, spokes you can tell were settling as they are new wheels. I can't wait to get this thing out on the trail.

Sounds like you're going in full speed. 19t is pretty aggressive to start, but only you know how much you and your knees can handle.

Looking good so far Foo!!

I think you will love SS'ing. It makes you a stronger rider and breathes new life into old trails.

Keep the pics coming as you finish it up.
