Default Niner Rear D Cable & Heal

For those with hardtail Niners, do you catch your heal on the rear derailleur cable?

I've pretty much finished my MCR build but can't ride right now due to an injury. Looking at the rear cable routing I notice how the rear dérailleur cable cuts straight across the curved seat stay. It seems like my heal is going to catch the cable while riding from time to time.

If this becomes a problem I think I can run full cable housing past the top tube and use a cable tie so the housing follows the curved seat stay.

My rear cable runs under the top tube and then down the seat stay on my 29er. I have never had a problem catching the cable.

Pics of the cable routing issue in question:

Pic of the almost completed build. I still need to get the fork cut.

It looks pretty high to catch your heal on it.

Cool you should be able to shift with your foot.

That's kinda what I'm worried about.

I would tend to agree. Full housing in the rear is the only way to deal with this. Once I get out there with it I will be able to determine if it will be a problem. I have extra housing so doing the work is no big deal. I wanted to check if this was an existing issue for others. It doesn't sound like it, which is cool.

My 29er hardtail has housing over the cable where it travels from the top tube to the seat stay. On the seat stay the cable is exposed but it has guids that it is secured through.

you could try to find an eyelet or something to add to the frame in the middle of the stay to pull the cable over, but in doing so you will introduce the likelihood of shifting issues with wear/stretch/movement.
In that area I would run full housing, zip tie it to the stay and then wrap. Did the same thing on my old Santa Cruz Bullit. That area gets a bunch of dirt and will gunk-up your cables

sorry I was looking at the pic wrong and thought the cable was located on the chain stay. I have never seen that part of the frame wrapped-up like that

IMO you have nothing to worry about. I ran gears on my SIR9 for awhile and never had a problem. Oh and I wear size 13 shoes

Had that part wrapped on my 575 and the tape got pretty banged up over the years from some chain slap and falls.

I wrapped the non-drive side chain stay as well on this bike. This is my first painted from in years and I want it to stay looking perty. I actually find of like the way it looks. In the end it doesn't really matter much one way or the other. It may come off down the road.

worry about the cable you are good.

I am the same way with my frames. Picked up a sheet of 3M clear tape and put it on all of the cable rub areas
