I'm going to be picking up an E13 DRS to use with my M770 crank and was wondering if anyone here uses or has used a DRS.
1.) Was the additional friction from the DRS noticeable and did it affect your climbing? 2.) Did the front derailleur require more maintenance then usual? 3.) What kind of chain lube since mineral oil based lube shouldn't be used (bye bye my beloved Boeshield T9)? How did you determine chain length? |

I just put a Blackspire Stinger Dual Ring Tensioner on my RFX with M770 cranks, it works great uphill, back peddling and I have not dropped a chain, it cost $24 at BB, vary easy to install, you will need a Bashguard, you can get one for about $30, still under the $100 + you will spend on the E13, I know Mouse Jockey has been using the Blackspire and a few other brands, he should be able to give you some good advice, throw him a PM or maybe he will chime in
Why can’t you use mineral oil based lubes on Chain Guides or is that just with the E13. |

I'm usually the last one up the hill anyways so no real difference to me. 2.) Did the front derailleur require more maintenance then usual? The only other difference is that you adjust the high limiter screw to restrict shifting beyond the middle ring. 3.) What kind of chain lube since mineral oil based lube shouldn't be used (bye bye my beloved Boeshield T9)? How did you determine chain length? I use White Lightning so no change for me. Determining chain length is the same as without the guide. Just use the middle ring instead of the big ring when measuring. Wrap the chain around the middle ring and big cog without going through any of the derailleurs then add two links (or one inner link plus the quicklink). Hope this helps. |

I 2nd the Blackspire Stinger. Even without a top guide I've never dropped the chain.
When measuring your chain, be sure to run it through any guide. C

For chain length, I shift into the big-big combo (and, as Cal Epic mentioned, run it through the guide), deflate the main air chamber or remove the coil from the rear shock, and compress the suspension to make sure bottoming my suspension won't rip the rear derailleur off. |
