Default hanging my bike...

hey all

i want to hang my bike in the corner of my terrace (due to lack of space).

i'm looking to hang it with just one big hook, removing the front tire and hanging it from the triangle.

now... i'm picturing a large hook with a rubber coating to avoid scratching.

since i've never hung anything besides a small picture on a bulletin board, is there anyone who can recommend a specific hook they may use?

im at work right now, so i thought id ask before i head over to home depot after work.

thanks

-Danny

We have a couple of our bikes hanging in the garage from hooks. We actually have them hung by the nose of the seats. My bikes use the larger black hooks (fairly thick black coating), and my wife's are hung by the yellow (you guessed it..yellow coating) hooks. I have no idea what brand they are, but the hooks have served their purpose well for several years, and are very inexpensive.

I couldn't find a hook with high enough weight rating at Home Depot. I got some from Ace. They're big enough for a large MTB tire. They'll hold 40lbs max, so if it's bigger than that, you'll need 2. Oh, and the rating changes depending on how you hang it (ceiling or wall).

You'll need a drill and some bits to pre-drill the hole.

Make sure you hit the middle of the stud or joist. I used very small nails to find the sides and shot the drillbit right in the middle.

Test that puppy before you put your pride and joy on it!

I use a few of the Leonardo bike wall hooks by Delta Designs:

I asked a friend to help me locate the wall studs and we just drilled the hooks in there.

If you hung up the bike upside down should be worried about any oil leak from the fork????

thanks guys

the reason im looking to hang it from the triangle is because there's not enough space to have it hanging horizontally.

i'll make sure i check the load cap. for the hooks, never thought of that.

however, that Leonardo one might work for what i need... hmmm

think so?

maybe if you have an issue with the seals.

Some forks can have internal issues. My Tora has instructions on getting it back by flipping the lockout a few times.

I wouldn't really worry about the forks. If anything it will help lubricate the seals. I would be more worried about hanging it upside down and an air bubble in the disc brake system causing a problem. Keep the master cylinder higher than the caliper and you should be fine. I've transported bikes upside down before and never had a problem but I've heard about it. Urban legend?

I just found out my Pike leaks from the Motion Control damper top when hung upside down. Now I don't know how to store my bike. My seals dont leak at all and it doesn't leak from the Motion Control thingy when I'm riding. Only when upside down.

this urban legend came to life one morning for me with my shimano xt disc brakes on my superlight. for some reason i had it upside down, i think i was adjusting the front caliper and when i was done, i turned it back over after mounting the wheel and i pulled the lever and it went all the way to the handlebar. after pumping it many, many times it eventually went back to normal...the rear brake was fine though..

I've got mine hanging from the rafters in the garage - two big hooks from Home Despot, some rope and a pulley - had it there the last two years and no problems

I made a couple hooks out of pieces of all-thread, about 5/8" diameter. I bent them into a desirable shape and jammed a piece of hose over each.

I hang all of my bikes from the ceiling and they do hang from the wheels so they are updide down... Never had a challeng with any of the forks and I use rubber bands on the brake levers to keep pressure in the system and have yet to have any issues...

There are companies that don't recommend hanging their forks upside down. Check with the fork company you have on your bike before you hang it....
