Default Mounting 29" Tires

OMFG I have been battling to mount a Bontrager Dry X 29 tire on a Stan Arch rim for nearly 30 minutes. I was able to mount it without a tube after a great dealing of wrestling. However I cannot get it to mount with a tube.

Is there some trick? Is this something unique to 29" tires, Stan Archs, or these Bontrager tires?

If I were on a ride I think I would walk out rather than go through this amount of work to fix the problem.

It is the Stan's rims. All tires fit tight when you first mount them. Soapy water, plastic tire levers and a few beers is all it takes..........

What do you do on the trail then? No soapy water and generally no beer.

I have a set of levers for downhill tires I break out when the going gets tough.

My experience with 29" tires is that they are usually too loose. I have rolled Exi's off my Mavic 719 twice. I have used Exi's, Rampages, and Ignitors all went on by hand.

Well, I dunno about the beer part...

I think they're easier the second time around.

I think once they're mounted it'll be a little easier next time. I read somewhere, there's a few of the 9er tires that will fit easier, just ever so slightly larger. Can't remember the models though. Search emptybeer.

its mainly the stans wheels... they are the largest out there I think. Just make sure you have the tire squeezed tight in the center of the wheel in order to give you the most room to pop the last lip over.

I just ordered valve stems, yellow tape, and sealant from NoTubes. I had to get more tape because I destroyed the tape The Path installed trying to get my tires on last night. I was able to mount the tire without a tube but not with the tube. I also picked up some extra wide levers and 29" tubes.

Unfortunately Stan recommends mounting the wheel with a tube for at least 30 minutes to set the tape before running tubeless. So no matter what I have to mount the tire with a tube in there at least once.

Let's hope I can now mount a friggin' tire. You'd thing after biking this long I could put a tire on a rim.

rim tape the Path uses makes it tough to get on. Try some packing or electrical tape.......don't laugh it works

Just be sure the bead is in what Stan calls the "drop center".
Did you watch the install movie?

I had the same trouble using Velox rim tape on a Stans Arch rim. Switched out to Stans yellow tape and it was a thousand times easier. Just like a good'ol 26" wheel.

The rim tape The Path used seems pretty thin. It's blue and much thinner than the traditional cloth rim tape.

Stan doesn't use any rim tape in his video, just the yellow (sealer) tape.

Yes, beer also acts as a great lubricant to pop that tire into place.

The blue tape is likely a tad thinner than electrical tape. It's basically the same as Stan's yellow tape......just blue and sold by Specialized. It rocks.

stuff you guys put on my rims (for the Sultan) was the thick cloth tape.

Can you use this Blue Specialized tape for tubeless applications? Meaning not use the Stan's tape?

Bet you a beer it is all made by 3M
