Default Cal Poly SLO senior project - pretty cool

One of my customers sent me these photos. Here is the text that went along with it.

"He is in his last year (ME) at Cal Poly SLO and made this for his senior project. He designed it and wrote all the CNC programs. Someone donated the front shocks, wheels, brakes, crankset and derailers but he made the frame, brackets, swingarm and rear shock dealio.

Pretty good for a kid in college. He was here over Thanksgiving burning the midnight oil in my garage (machine shop). Machined some last minute parts and put it together over Thansgiving. Even made his name (Rawley) in decals,

He might come in handy some day!"

I've seen a few student built bikes and I must say this is one I'd like to take for a spin.

Looks really good from what I can see of it. I think that kids got major talent!

I wonder if he wouldn't mind showing the geometery on it? What's the overall spec's on it? I like the design.

Hummm, kinda looks like the link on one of my bikes.

I don't have any other info as far as frame weight and the angles. But it sure looks good on the stand!

I wish I could build something like that. Sweet looking bike. Wonder if he could send that to a bike builder instead of a resume?

looks like a cross between a Kona, Specialized, and trek. The best of all worlds. Not bad on the CNC code. I didn't think they taught that in school

I donno man, I think I see a horst link in there. Makes it kinda Turnerish.

As far as CNC that's all they teach. Handle machining is fast becoming a lost art (I'm sad to say).

Edit, Opps, you caught that with the Specialized.

Ah yes, Turner is what I meant. Trek was what came to mind first, all I thought some bike brand that started with a "T".
Yeah CNC can be a valuable thing VERY VALUABLE. Especailly with an engineering CNC combo. I go to Cal Poly Po. as an EE, but now I wonder if they offer CNC courses thier.

CNC code is actually pretty easy. I made up a CNC code for a simple part for one of my labs. Basically just designed it in solidworks, opened it up in mastercam mill and used that to write the code. Just convert some edges, set tools and it basically does the rest for you.

Yeah I suppose so, but not to many people know it. This is why it can be a valuable tool. Normally it's a trade school class instead of a university class.

Sweet, what type of riding do you do?
Are involved with the cycling club at all at school?

I ride mostly DH, but do XC for fun (cruising pace) vs just trying to cover as many miles as possible in the shortest time type riding.

Im sure we have bumped into each other or crossed paths at bldg 9 or 17 or at the bike rack. I do alot of XC/Trail riding, and progressing to the freeride scene.

My roommate is also a member here. (theClayster)

Nah... i dont really do the cycling club on campus, but i know some of the cpp club guys.

that is a sweet bike, but theres one thing i cant get past, I've never seen it in person. I go to CPSLO, and I'd think whoever made this would at least be on the team?

anyways, its a sweet looking bike, I'd love to ride it.

interestingly enough, you gotta learn everything if you're going to get to the point of being able to make something like a bike. I've already gotten all the training to do hand machining, but I am working on doing the CNC stuff

Yo.

Another SLO alum here, but I studied accounting. I graduated Spring 2003. w00t.

For the guy with the question about getting into the cycling biz, you have several avenues available to accomplish it. One friend of mine, who is now fully entrenched in the biz, received his degree in ME and did his senior project on carbon fiber. Smart guy imo. An old roommate of mine also got his degree in ME, and while he doesn't work in the cycling biz, his work in school could have easily landed him a job. His senior project involved learning how to work a CFD program and designing a front spoiler for the Formula SAE car. Fyi: CFD (c* fluid dynamics) is used extensively by Trek.

* = computational?
