How exactly does this make shifting smoother?

It eliminates the bend/loop of the cable for the rear der. Just creates less friction in the cable and makes shifting easier and smoother. I have been using one on my Foes for a couple of years and it worked great for awhile, but once it gets dirty and worn it sucks. Not worth it in my opinion. I'm going to be switching out to an SRAM XO rear derailleur which the cable goes straight into instead of need that big bend to loop around the backside.

Never had much of a problem with the rear der cable............but then again, don't have much use for gears either

I currently use an XO on my main bike, so I don't have the Rollamajig on any bikes other than my wife's XC racer and our cruiser tandem. I've found that they work great but require periodic cleaning and lubing of the bearing to keep everything smooth.

If the bike has "chainstay routing" of the rear derailleur cable, the Rollamajig is key to fast, smooth shifting.
