Default Anyone know how to bleed Magura brakes?

I've got a couple of sets of Magura Louises that need bleeding. From what I understand they are bit complicated to bleed. I have the small service kit but need someone to show me how to do it.

If you willing to show me I'll be happy to provide lunch and beer!

I'm in Orange County and will be out of town this week but if you can wait, I'll help you.

If you want to try it yourself here's a quick rundown on how to do it: (My service kit came with instructions maybe yours did too?)
  • Remove the wheel and brake pads from the caliper.
  • Rotate lever/master cylinder assy so the master cylinder is level. Clean around the master cylinder cap then remove the cap.
  • Using a tire lever or screwdriver with tape on the tip push the caliper pistons all the way in. If you have the yellow plastic block that came with the brakes put that in the slot in the caliper. If not, find something to wedge in there to prevent the pistons from working their way out.
  • In your service kit you will have two syringes. Install the hose and threaded fitting onto one of the syringes and fill with the Magura blood fluid. Make sure there aren't any air bubbles in there.
  • Remove the bleed fitting from the caliper and screw the syringe fitting in it's place.
  • This is where a second set of hands come inhandy - push the blood fluid from the filled syringe up through the brake system while another person sucks up the excess from the master cylinder with the empty syringe. Have some rags handy because the first time you'll likely be spilling all over the place.
  • Reverse the process by sucking the fluid out of the caliper with the syringe. It's very important your helper does not let the master cylinder go dry as you suck the fluid out or you'll introduce a bunch of air in the lines and will have to start over again.
  • Repeat this process until you don't have any air bubbles.
  • unscrew the syringe/fitting and replace the bleed plug.
  • make sure the master cylinder is filled to the top.
  • reinstall the cap. The bladder on the cap will force the excess fluid to spill but it's ok.
  • Do not overtighten the cap screws.
  • Reinstall the pads.
  • Impress your neighbors doing stoppies in the street.
This was by memory so I hope I didn't forget anything.

http://www.magura.com/english/frameset/frameset.htm

Find the manual. Has instructions step by step. I followed the instructions for Marta SL and worked out fine.

This site also has lots of info on Magura brakes.

I've read and re-read the instructions but without pictures I'm not confindent in doing it myself.

Cal-

I can wait and will probably be in Dana Point in a couple weekends. Maybe I could stop by then or you go over it with me at the Fullerton Swap Meet.

I've bleed a few and used the shimano resevoir clamp instead of using another syringe; less messy and is an air tight fit.

Also I found this to be the best tip from the instructions. I to wish they would put illustrations as well.

"IMPORTANT STEP - Place the pads back in the caliper, but do not secure them. Take the caliper fitting screws completely out of the mounting tabs so the caliper is free. Now re-install the wheel with the rotor. Place the caliper with pads on the rotor without fitting screws. Push fluid into the system with the bleed syringe still attached to the caliper. Stop pushing on syringe when you feel resistance. This will set the pistons/pads on the rotor for the particular pad wear and put the maximum amount of fluid in the system." (magura)

Hope this helps.

That's a great addition that I forgot about. It will work without this step but this will ensure the best possible performance.

I need to check into one of those Shimano clamps.

Thanks.

I might be a little closer still. I'm in Fullerton, and would be glad to show you the process. I'm available most any day after 2pm, with a little notice.

What's this, Chris? Haven't heard of it, but sounds like it can only make a messy operation easier. True?

True. It is Magura's Pro bleed kit.
