It's a relatively simple job if you follow these instructions from Fox. Click on the image for a larger view, or you can open the pdfs. Unfortunately, the STR size limits prevented me from posting it as one pdf.
BTW, I picked up a strap wrench for a few dollars at Harbor Freight.

Go here: http://foxracingshox.com/fox_tech_ce...007_om_eng.htm Select Rear Shocks in the left column, then select Air Sleeve Maintenance. From the top of this page (just before step 1), you can watch the video of this procedure or view the PDF.

Thanks for posting these instructions!
I rebuilt my rear shock (Fox RP3) today using the instructions and it was pretty easy. I'd skip the step about using a bolt remover to remove those posts since they seem to fit through fine. It also unscrewed without the strap wrench, and I didn't even use a vise. In all, I needed dental picks to remove the washers, the Fox kit w/ Lube & washers, the tools to remove the shock from the bike, and a shock pump. The 1 word of warning i received was to keep everything spotless because 1 spec of dirt could ruin it. Now I have no excuse for falling beind in maintenance. Next up.....Fork rebuild... |

i think i've done about 100 fox rear air shock seal kit installs. it really isn't that hard. have only had trouble on a few of them, but fox has always been most helpful. all rear air shocks from 2000 and up DHX, Float, RP series. all can use the same seal kit. same shaft size on each. pretty cool. keeps things simple.
and yes, have never needed a strap wrench. but use everything else they recommend. also, i can look, but those of you that have sockets laying around. there's a few out there. that work perfect for pressing out the DU bushings on all fox rear shocks. makes changing those stupid simple. |

The cans on the RP3 and DHX-A are interchangeable. I would assume the RP23 is the same as well.
I've had my DHX-A apart before. Super simple C

Keep in mind that the cans are only interchangeable between shocks with the same eye-to-eye length and shock travel (there may be some combinations that are the same, though). The can length varies with shock size.
