I am no E-Expert on road bikes. So what I am hearing is Steel would be the best choice for a commuter. Yea Pat let me say it first ti If I was a baller like you then maybe. I like the concept of a SS like Burners rig. However there are some hills down here in South County

also have a Kona Paddy Wagon that I use for commuting, I have ridden it through Santiago Canyon a number of times.

And what are you trying to say? You don't do hills on your SS?

It is cheeper than carbon bike and if you end up hating road you don't lose that much.

You can check it out. As far as your commute. Jut like your SS if geares correctly it will be OK for about 80 percent of the ride but some hills will be tough and you'll spin out on some flats. Talk to Brian at The Path.

My Paddy Wagon Gets me up and down just about everything with 42x16 gearing.
The steepest up has been Ridge Park. As long as there's nothing that steep on your ride from San Clemente to Aliso Viejo, you should be fine with the Paddy Wagon.
You can always plan a route that has minimal hills if you're really concerned about it. Bike Metro has tolerance levels for hills and skill level.
