Moved to website discussion. Rob sorta hit the nail on the head. Spambots and human spam. There's been a few cases that actual people have came on to SPAM but instead of making a thread they would send lots of PM's to random people. A little hard to deal with on my end because I don't know about it till either A) they send me one or B) one of the people they PM lets me know.

Depending on the message you could also send it to multiple people too. I think 5's the max for non-doohicky people and maybe 10 for doo-hickey people? I can't remember off the top of my head. Hope that helps.
