Originally posted on www.bikeforums.net, SoCal regional forum, but not too many people seemed to be interested. I think this trail is one of the best for beginners, as it gives a taste of singletrack without being too difficult. It also doesn't have a huge amount of elevation change. Around a 16 mile ride (I don't have a bike computer to be sure).
I plan to start the ride at the Nobel Athletic Area in the University City area of San Diego. http://maps.google.com/maps?client=s...=1&sa=N&tab=wl Hopefully the air will be clean and clear by November. Silly me, I forgot to post the time: Date: 11/3/2007, hopefully Start location: Nobel Athletic Area Meet time: 8:30 Roll time: 9:00 Note that meet time is 8:30 to get all prepped and stuff, and I'd like to be rolling by 9:00AM, but I won't be a nazi about it. |

I just bought some Ivy Block. I'll bring the bottle to the ride. That should help some.

Sorry I had to split early. Good ride today, even with the walking. Thanks for showing me around.

Here's a quick one. We started at Nobel Athletic Area and dropped into Rose Canyon, heading west. There were a couple of puddles of water, one I knew we had to go through but it was deeper than before, and one where I forgot about the bypass. This got some people wet.
At the drainage culvert under the freeway, we took the high trail above the culvert, which isn't the easiest to ride, so I think most people walked some of it. We rode almost the entire length of San Clemente Canyon west to east. This was the nicest part of the ride with sections of singletrack under the shade of trees. Near the end, Jose (bajamtnbkr) guided us towards the completion of the loop route. This involved a lot of walking. The trail eventually goes under the freeways in a really tight, low spot, then you have to walk up and down some big rocks. We then went up a big fireroad that was loose at the top, involving more walking, found our way through the nursery, back north to the train tracks through Rose Canyon, and back to the cars. |

This was my first STR ride. Thanks for waiting for me to catch up after each segment. At 76, I can't climb very fast, and I always go slow on technical sections to make sure I keep the rubber side down. After we rode under Genesee in San Clemente Canyon, my wife called, and asked me to take her to the hospital. There, it was determined she had suffered a small stroke. She is OK, and is not expected to have any permanent impairment.

I was wondering about your age, I really hope to be able to ride as good as you do at your age, I know a lot of people that won't even get up at all and here you are mountain biking much better than some kids. Thanks for coming to the ride and I was pleased to meet you. Jose |

Thanks everybody. I've just brought my wife home from the hospital, and she continues to get better. For example, she now has less difficulty in writing. I look forward to future STR rides of the "Beginner Friendly" variety where it is OK to be a little slow. Carl
PS: Are there any other 'elderly' members out there? |
