Default Chantry Flats / Zion

For those that want to explore the San Gabriels this is just one of its gems.
Its off the 210 at Santa Anita Blvd. in the city of Arcadia. Take Santa Anita Blvd for about 3 miles it turns ino Santa Anita Canyon Road and park by the Ranger Station.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...wloc=addr&om=1

You may need an extortion pass.

Meeting at the Chantry Flats parking lot at 8:15. Riding at 8:30.

This is an intermediate ride mostly singletrack with as SprocketHead says "exposure up the ying yang." Check out some ride reports from the past.

Chantry / Mt Zion / Sturtevant
Chantry Flats - Winter Creek Trail

Its appoximately 11 miles with ~2000ft elevation gain. Here is the geoladders link. We wont be doing the road climb thats why its a little shorter.

I usually do the shorter loop (lower&upper winter creek) which takes about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. A newb asked me to take him there awhile back and that was a mistake because it took about 4 hours and he walked 50% of it. There is lots of rocks and exposure as you can see in the pics. I have never done the Zion/Sturtevant loop, so it will be new to me too. I will do what the group wants to do.

This is one of my favorite rides. I haven't done it 5 years but the winter creek and the zion loop are awesome. Fast and technical singletrack, ahh, heaven!
Come to think of it, I was riding a hardtail back then.

I went last week and it is in good shape considering how dry it has been. Not much water flowing either.

Any washed out areas? Poison Oak?

Water crossings? Adds to the trails charm- I am fine without them though!

STJUNKIE- I am sure we will be crossing paths more often (i.e. The San Gab's) now that the weather has begun to cool. Looking forward to it!

Bring along!

Dino, you will find a little poison oak on this trail, no water crossings, and a really fun hike-a-bike up the frontside of Zion.

This ride is one of my favs.

Great trail.
If not for the Sale, I would go.

Anybody up for hitting it in a couple of weeks?
Say Sunday, 9/23/07?

Thanks!

My only concern was showing up and having a forest of oak on the trail. Was riding El Prieto---- the Oak kept creeping its way on to the trail! Not good!

But hey, that's El Prieto.......

i'd be there if not for the sales too.

I just remembered a couple of water crossings once you get on the Gab (near the end of the ride) From what STJunkie said, they are probably mostly dry.

The Path already got all my spare cash (and then some) this week, so I'm all over this.

Dino, don't be disappointed if you don't see me on the IH; my Ells is out of mothballs and got some major love this week. Oh, and what should I bring you for the post-ride? ... Bacardi Breezers or a flask full of Cosmos?

[SIZE=3]Man, too bad I'm out of town this weekend. This is my staple ride (usually do upper/lower winter) as I live practically at the bottom of the gate to Chantry.
The hike-a-bike part up to Zion from the split right before the campground is short and if you're strong enough and are in fair shape, most of it (not all) can be ridden. That excludes me as I have to hike about 1/2 the 1 mile section to the top. From there, what a blast! One of the more scenic rides you'll go on. Other then the exposure, I wouldn't call this a technical ride. No need for big hit bikes. An all mountain bike around 28-34 lbs. with 5-6" travel is perfect for this ride.

There is poison oak on this ride, don't be fooled. There are some areas which could come in contact with you if not ridden the perfect line. Even then it's hit and miss. If you're immune is sensitive towards P.O., you might want to scrub down with Zanfel after the fact or wear arm and leg protectings to protect your exposed areas.
