Default No South OC Group Love??

Last night I road Aliso and ran into one of my old riding buddies at the trail head. We had not ridden together in awhile (a few months). It seems now with life going on we tend to ride on a spur of the moment. "Don’t have anything going on (insert day and time here) so I can ride."

This got me thinking about our old group from a few years back. There was a core of 5 of us that would ride every week night on Thursdays. Sometimes there would be a conflict and one or more would need to ride on Wednesday or something but we made plans around our riding schedule. Other riders would join us from time to time. Sometimes we would have 10+ riders other days it was just two of us.

I read the posts on the weekly Fullerton Loop ride and wonder why there is no So OC Group love?

This is what I propose for So OC’ers.

 • Let’s pick a day (Wednesday or Thursday?) for our weekly ride and stick to it.
 • Pick a starting time (5:30pm?)
 • Let’s mix it up! To be honest I have been riding most of these trails in So OC since the late 80’s and do not want to ride the same trail every week. However there are a few that I have never ridden.
 • Post the weekly rides weeks in advance. That way we have no excuses.

Thoughts??

I think the main issue with that is that this is So. OC and I could be wrong but their are watering hole (bars) out their. I would be down for a ride out their though, I can bring my own beer.

I am in. I know a few of us have talked about this before and it hasn't happened yet. Might not want to do it on Thurs. though cause I know a lot of people ride the Fully Loop that day.

I work in Aliso and live in San Clemente. The Fully Loop does not appeal to me

Lightbulb An observation:

It would seem that like everything else mountain biking rdies go in cycles. There use to be a Huge ride out of El Moro by SHARE with up to 75 riders participating... These were on Tue nights out of the main parking lot (way before it cost $10 to park there!) Groups would form according to levels and off everybody would go... a big social event followed by dinner afterwards at a local watering hole. There are still rides going on but much much smaller. Anybody remember Andy's Fred Rides at Aliso?

Not sure why this happens, planets align?, cycles of the moon? sun spots?... don't know... it just happens for a time... then fades to a shadow of its former self. Right now F-Loop is big and popular... several years from now, riders will look back and wonder why the crowds no longer come....

I can appreciate your wanting to start up something like this again. The idea is to pick a time and start advertising it to people. You need a core group that will absolutely show up and ride... then food afterwards... as this is as much a social event as a ride.

I'm usually open Tue & Thu eves ... but our season is quickly coming to an end.

Let's say we set the day and time for Thursday 6:00

Aug 9th = Aliso Woods
Aug16th = STT
Aug 23rd= Blackstar
Aug 30th= Whitting
Sep 6th = El Morro

etc..............

I will volunteer to gather the suggestions (via PM) and schedule the rides. The key is keeping the same day and time locked in. It works we did it for three years

We are talking about two different things. I have seen many many of theses scheduled group rides come and go. Team Basso STT every Thursday ring a bell. I also rode with a hard core group in Silverado Canyon for awhile.

The problem is riding the same trail on the same day every week gets really old. We had an unspoken rule that we would not ride the same trail more than once a month. The only times we would ride a trail more than once a month was either during the winter (night rides) or if we were training for the VQ. In the spring and Summer we would avoid the STT, Blackstar, Maple Springs and San Juan and others because we would ride those trails as our winter night rides.

Also every once in awhile we would get a bite to each or something but not every week. For example we would ride Maple Springs to the motorway. By the time we were done it was past 9:00. No time to party we needed to get home take a shower etc…

Best of luck getting this going. I'll try to make them. I tried getting a Wed STT/Luge night ride going regularly but it just sort of petered out due to lack of interest.

As others have mentioned, it seems that many either don't have lights or are afraid to ride at night. Throw in the night closure of County parks and it's difficult at best to get something going regularly. Personally I love night riding trails that I've gotten bored with during the day. Night riding is an entirely different experience. The Luge at night is one of my favorites.

I think there's enough of us down here to make it work. Time Out Sports Bar is just down the street from Aliso. While we still have light that could be an option for rehydration.
