I'll be stopping by the Cleveland National Forest this afternoon. I'll ask them if they know about any sneaky closures coming up in the area. I'm sure we're fine. The warnings are generally for people who want to build bonfires in the dry brush.

Well, some bad news.

I visited the local CNF office earlier this afternoon. Around 1pm a fire broke out in the Descanso/Pine Valley area. They said if the fire isn't contained by today, there is a high likelihood that all area trail systems will be shut down this weekend, including Noble.

I'll be checking back with the office on Friday for an update on the situation. Hope for the best!

Here's a short local news blurb on it:

WHAT! That sucks! Did you tell them we have a BIG ride planned and they have to put it out??

Oh man.

We are still on for A RIDE this Saturday. We can put our collective heads together and come up with a suitable replacement somehow.

Unthanks for being the bearer of bad news, but definitely thanks for letting me know... Wouldn't have heard about it otherwise...

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooo!

That sucks B*lls in a major way, lets hope there isn't to much damage & they get it out quickly. I'll be up for a ride relocation if needed. How about some San Juan - Chiquito Action http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=130 similar stats!

Damn that would suck if this didn't happen. But if it doesn't can I suggest an alternative?? La Costa! Close to the beach so it should be cool, not a bad climb (actually kind of fun because it has some technical parts) and a couple of super fun runs coming down, one of which is worthy of a bigger big. Just a thought if Noble is a no go.

Justin and I were thinking about another few routes up in the mountains...

Specifically, Idyllwild!

We'd take a run up Thomas Mountain and down Ramona Trail, have lunch, then head up and shuttle down Ernie Maxwell all the way to the last half of the Hurkey Creek trail.

It's a bitchin shuttle, complete with 1000ft of climbing (nearly) in just 1-2 miles before a really fun long descent.

It won't disappoint, and temps are supposed to be slightly cooler in Idyllwild than in Pine Valley.

I'm still CROSSING MY FINGERS for Noble...

That sounds like it could be fun.

Another possibility, while not in the mountains, would be a Daley Double @ Daley Ranch in Escondido. We did a couple loops on Sunday and it was worth ~26 miles and 4000ft of climbing. It's no Noble, but it was still a fun ride.

Perhaps even a Daley Triple?

FIRE UPDATE 5:00pm The fire is very fast moving and has consumed 900 acres in a little over 4 hours. It is currently 0% contained. Everything just south of Noble within the Descanso district of the CNF is currently closed.

PINE VALLEY, Calif. -- A wind-driven wildfire continues to burn through hundreds of acres in a remote area near Pine Valley, and officials say it could grow to 10,000 acres before it's out.

Closures

Descanso Ranger District will close all National Forest land south of Interstate 8, as well as Pine Mountain Road, and Fred Canyon Road, north of Interstate 8;

I am so down for Idyllwild. I live 30 minutes away and have never ridden there.

Is the Ernie Maxwell Shuttle a real shuttle?? Would I want a 40+ pound bike up there or something I can actually pedal??

I hope every still comes out to ride with us. We will also need to figure out the shuttle details so make sure to bring your 4 bike racks and extra tie downs.

The Black Max will fit 5 bikes and 5 people easily.

No DH bike necessary, unfortunately. I would probably suffer on the Enduro, but I had a blast on the Dos Niner in April. It's just a bit rough on me and noisy at the moment

The Ramona Trail is sort of like a rougher version of SJT. VERY fun.

The Ernie Maxwell shuttle is mostly down, with one section of hell thrown in to make you honest. Last time we were up there someone had built quite a few jumps on the side of the trail so there is still plenty of fun for the bigger bikes.
Let's note that until the forest is closed it's still NOBLE!!

Further, Ernie Maxwell is a BIGGGG hiker hot spot in Idyllwild, so we'll need to be more than ready to kill our flow and watch out for hikers. Big bikes are really not necessary, and there is a bit of climbing!!

I'll actually bust out a Daley triple around the first of the year. It's close to home and the 36 miles/6,000' of climbing will be decent CC training. Maybe even a Daley Quadruple??

It won't be Saturday though.
