Default Malibu Backbone - Sun 7/29/07 9am

Had a request for this ride....

We'll park at the lot on Kanan at the tunnel. (1st tunnel from the beach side, 3rd tunnel from the 101 side)

Couple of route options being discussed.

1) the usual out and back to Corral Cyn / Little Moab
1 + e.c.) add an out and back to Zuma ridge in the other direction.

2) Out and back to Zuma ridge, then backbone to Corral Cyn, then around to Tapia and into Malibu Creek SP, then take the shuttle bus back to parking lot.

3) park at Malibu Creek SP, up bulldog, do the backbone in the opposite direction, end up at Kanan, and take the shuttle back to the cars.

It's by the beach, but parts of that canyon get hot.

My vote is for #1 (plus extra credit)

Approximately how many miles? Also, I've never been there what are the trails like and expected pace?

2 ways to get there, freeways or PCH, (I'd go PCH but I leave it up to you)

1st way:
405N to 10W to PCH north, pass Pepperdine, pass Paradise Cove (it's far), turn right on Kanan, after the 1st tunnel the trailhead and parking lot will be on your left.

2nd way:
405N to 101N to Kanan, take a left (toward ocean), just before the 3rd tunnel, you will see trailhead and parking on the right.

-------------------------

Geoladders route (in reverse though, parking at Corral cyn) DO NOT PARK HERE:
Geoladders -- Backbone: Corral - Kanan

an insane route that I'd like to try later, as we all prep for VQ:
Geoladders -- Bulldog - Backbone - Edison

Justin: since when are you afraid of climbing?

CC: the ride is about 13 miles, but lots of ups and downs, I think it works out to about 2500' climbing. Some tough spots, this trail gives a little of everything.

As far as pace, I dunno, guess it depends who shows up. Right now, with just "J3" showing up (Jose, Jeff, Justin), I'd say it's going to be pretty quick. No rider ever left behind, no worries.

We've talked about doing #2 and #3 but they both might be extra challenging in the heat. #1 isn't so bad in the heat just the one monster hill climb on the way back can be pretty warm but if we time it right and hit the climb later in the afternoon should be just fine. The fog has been coming in late afternoon. Love to take the new wheels for a spin if they are good to go....

Where is this in relation to Point Mugu (sp?)? That's the only Malibu trail I know....(fun trail, with an easy 20+ miles)

Jose - it's a long 13 miles, plus more if we do the extra credit out to Zuma ridge in the other direction. It'll take a few hours.

DZ - I've SS'd it, once, did some walking... a couple of the climbs are steep and sustained ST. I'd gear down if I bring the SS.

I'm down for any route you guys want to do though. and if at the end of the day you don't feel like you got enough, we could hit something else in the santa monicas on your way back south.

I will try and get my buddy Chris interested (we are about at the same level). If he is a go I am a go

Are you SS'ing it or going geared?

leaning toward SS, but depends how my legs feel, been feeling over trained lately... I don't like when my legs are sore at the start of a ride.

Well, I just figured that since you have a hard time rolling with the 26ers, we might want to go with something easy...j/k

So...have we decided on a route yet?
