Question Camp Nelson in early August

Starting to think about a weekend trip up to Camp Nelson in the Sequoias. It's got it all: alpine riding, redwoods, great single track and nice campgrounds. The Camp Nelson Trail is a great freeride trail and the Jordan Peak Lookout Trail is way fun... if you can find your way that is.

Anybody been up there this year?

I haven't been since last July. Great trails! Just don't drive there Friday at 5:00!

Is that the area about an hour north of Kernville?

Yes,

We usually get to it by going up 5 North to 99 North to 190 at Porterville.. go East to Camp Nelson. You can also come in 521 to CR107 the back way from Kernville. The place has plenty of good single track and great camping at Quaking Aspen Campgrounds... just watch out for the bears!

Yes, Camp Nelson is about 1 1/2 hours from Kernville. There is some good stuff up there. I would like to do more in that area.

If we can manage a weekend, we may be down for doing it.

It's about a 4 hr comfortable drive from Laguna Niguel... probably about 5 hrs from San Diego. I'll keep everyone posted on the trip.

PS: BTW nice blog site.. we've done the long Catalina weekend bike/camping trip for 7 years in groups of 8-12. Camped at Little Harbor and rode all over the island ...up to Parson's Landing at northern tip with a tiny bit of single track thrown in. The ride out of Avalon is steep but really beautiful up on top.

Yeah, we may have to head back at some point to do that!! We were hoping to ride at least to one end of the island. It's hard to really explore without the bike shoes. We tried to get flats, but the guy said $15/set. Since they were plastic and we wouldn't have needed them again, we just did our tours.

The campground right outside of town was uber full of little boys and their dad's. Would've been a bad weekend camping there The hotel was killer, though!

Allison,

Little Harbor where we camp is on the other side of the island. You ride over to it & have the camping stuff, food, etc sagged over to it by truck... then ride up to Twin Harbors/Cat Harbor and beyound. The group camping at Little Harbor is fun as it's right on the beach and near the buffalo herds. They also have cold showers at Little Harbor. The final day, you have the camping stuff picked up and you ride back to Avalon via the airport road....Makes for a great long weekend.

I really need to find a better way to transport my bike.... I want to do this. I have not been in the redwoods since I was a kid...

I'm interested in this as well. Jeff--if I go you're welcome to carpool with me. I've got a nice rack that holds 4 bikes.

Default Good stuff

I rode up there last week. We did two trails...both were awsome. I would be into a trip up there anytime.
