You can verify the rider's skills by the coolness of their bike clothes and bike.

I sometimes lead this ride. If you do any riding in the Santa Ana mountains you should be fine for this. The problem is that we sometimes get people who may not be up to the climbs. This changes the ride because we all have to ride at their pace. We also offer novice rides so we try to encourage them to join up for those.

The Tecate Forest ride starts near the back gates of Irvine Park and immediately climbs into the hills north of Irvine Lake. It is a long and relentless climb to the forest but very doable for an experienced rider. If the group is up for it, we sometime take an extra credit loop at the top also.

Yeah, but 3.5 hours? That's waaay long. Mountain bikers take way too many breaks, man!

BTW - the Tecate ride is a great way to get your feet wet before signing up for the Fremont Loop.

3.5 hours is on the outside. I don't think I have ever seen it actully take that long, but you don't want to advertise a ride to be shorter than it could be. People don't like taking longer than what you told them.

HMM...The gold would go nicely on my singlespeed.

However, the lycra doesn't go so well with my mid section.

I've thought about doing this just to see what the trees are like. How close did the Sierra fire get to them?

What's wrong with gold kickstands? I think it would be cool to roll up on a huffy then do a 360 walk around then maybe a back flip or something neat like that . Then ask do I qualify.

I understand why it says they have to verify rider skills.
I think it goes farther than just rider skills though. I have had people show up on rides with bikes that would hardly make it on the bike trail or even down the driveway in front of the house. Yeah any bike can have a problem on the trail but some things just shouldn’t be falling off your bike on a ride. I broke a chain on sat bit that wasn’t because my bike was a not well maintaianed. It was my brute strength and my pure manliness that did it. ha ha j/k That hurt I was powering up a long step hill then ((snap!)). ey

Lycra is cool ! I have it on the inside of my riding shorts.
Back in 90 that was the only thing you could find that wouldn't hurt your nads on long rides.
I have a feeling this summer I will be riding with lycra if it is in the 100s. They just wont be the hot pink and bright green ones from back in the day . Those where a little silly . When I would wear the lycra shorts I always felt like I walked out of the house with no pants on like a bad dream. Its always the lycra guys that ride circles around me on the climbs that has to stop lol .

So who is going to the races this weekend? It should be fun.

Nearly all of the trees close to the trail were burned. There are a few that can still be seen but most are pretty far away. The good news is that they need fire to reproduce. Their seeds will not open on their own. The trick is that the fire has to occur during a certain window of opportunity in the tree's age and no one seems to know if that window was open at the time of the fire.
On one of our trips up there we were talking about the trees and a few people wondered off to find some live trees. When we got ready to leave I asked my wife to go find them. When she got to them they were checking out a fresh pool of blood and some drag marks. Apparently a lion heard us around the corner and decided to drag his kill into the brush. We high tailed it out of there. Don't want to get into an argument with a lion over some dead deer.

Here's the link to all the Irvine Ranch Land Reserve rides in case anyone needs it.
