This ride is in a Nat'l forest right? Just wondering cause it may rain Friday. I just want to make sure the trails will be open.

I believe it's BLM Land. Rain would be a good thing for this ride. It will make the wash more ride friendly (as opposed to HAB)

Unless there's a flash flood.

i have a question...

i am riding the 29er saturday and am wondering how bad this whole thorn thing really is. i don't normally get flats. if it is necessary to do something about the whole thorn thing, what should i do for the 29er? they don't make slime tubes for 29er, they don't have those silly thornproof strips for 29ers (at least not at shops around here).

will i be all that bad off with nevegals and nice thick tubes?

i guess worst case scenario is that i will have flats and ride sweep....

I rode this last year & had 7 flats, I was running Nevegals, with Specialized's version of slime. You can slime your own tubes. Buy Slime at the Homedepot in the garden section, it's with the lawn mowers. You can get a hugh bottle & it's the cheapest place.
Sucks to get a lot of flats, I felt bad last year as I was holding people up. Bring some pre slimbed spares too. I recomend long sleves or light armour also as the plants are very nasty, I'm sure you pick upt he thorns in your tires from passing the plants as much as riding over stuff.
If you want to line your tires cut an old inner tube on the seem and lay it on the inside for double protection. Last year everybody runnig Stans, Slimb or double wall tires did really well!

Forgive my ignorance on 29r's but can't you run a 26" tube on a 29r?

I wouldn't dream of doing this ride with regular tubes. Freaking cactus and thorns EVERYWHERE. Even on the trail. I think I pulled over 20 spines out of my tires after the last ride.

The Path has Conti 29er tubes with removable valve cores. I ride AZ alot and run Stans in my tubes. Justin, I know they are heavy but I would go to your bike shop and buy slime tubes and/or slime tire liners. You will need them. Nevs have paper thin sidewalls and are a light tire...no thorn protection.

You guys have fun and ride safe. No Ipods so you can hear the water coming down the wash. Tonight we are supose to get snow here in AZ, down to 7,000 ft.

Wish we could head over to the Path, but we're in Murrieta and at work today. There's not much locally (had to order Nevegal 2.35's for my 26" bike from The Path already this week!)

It wasn't really the weight he was worried about, just the fact that nothing is available. I may have him pick up 2 slime tubes for 26" today before we leave.

If it rains today but not tonight we should be fine. Flash floods only happen when it first rains, right?

nope.. flash floods can happen anytime.

however.... think of it this way. since we are smart enough to get to high ground when water and mud come rushing at us, we have a pretty good chance of being just fine.

most flash flood victims die in a car because they weren't smart enough to NOT try to drive through the torrent.

I'll bet most of those people were in SUV's with a triple decaf latte in one hand

You guys want me to stop by the Path and pick the items up for you before the trip?

Thanks for the offer!! I think we'll just stop at a LBS and see if we can pick up a few slime tubes (26") just in case. Other than that we should be good.

We need them to move like 30 miles east

Just got an update from my parents which live 5 miles away from the IMAX theatre in Rancho Mirage and they said that it is partly cloudy and no rain... Looking good!
