Default Hellride 2010 - Bike for Bender www.bikeforbender.com

    Hey folks,

Hellride is returning again for 2010. This year its going to take place on October 23.

This will be the second event in our Bike For Bender campaign we put together for our teammate Rob who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The support from the entire mountain bike community has been incredible and we thank you for everything.

The ride is a point to point shuttle of SART beginning at South Fork campground and ending at Uncle Howies Pizza in Redlands. This is a great way for people not familiar with this trail to see almost the entire trail in one day. Especially cool is the lesser known portions below Angelus Oaks.

Its going to be a really fun ride and will be more 'hellish' for some than others. Its typically about 36 miles 2450 feet of climbing and will take the better part of the day. Last year the last riders arrived about 6 or 7 hours after we all started. We will break into groups based on rider speed and to try to keep the flow for all riders.

    DIFFICULTY:
THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER RIDE. We want this to be fun but there is a lot of climbing and most intermediate/advanced intermediate riders will find this to be tough. We had some issues the last few years with people bringing beginner friends with them on the ride and then leaving their friends behind. The beginner friends had a miserable time and were out of gas in the first quarter mile, we really want to avoid this sort of thing. There are a few variations on the route in case people get tired but the shortest route will still be somewhere around 20 miles and 1800 feet of climbing.

    SHUTTLES (VERY IMPORTANT INFO):
The last few years I have tried to coordinate shuttles. This year will be no different. However, with the number of people we are expecting I am going to do it a bit differently. I am going to assume that everyone has a ride to Southfork and has someone to drive them back to the top to get their vehicle. For anyone who is able to drive this will be an opportunity to offer to shuttle drivers back to the top after the ride or to fill your car (and get gas money?) from people that need rides.

I am asking that if anyone has any extra room in their vehicle to please show up in the morning so we can minimize the number of shuttle drivers needed. I would like to get as many bikes/bodies into vehicles at the bottom so that fewer people need to drive back up to the top. We will have some people that have offered to drive vehicles back down to Uncle Howies, so if anyone is comfortable with this, this may be an option for you. For people that do not have a ride please contact me or reply in this thread and we will help to get you sorted out.

So what does all this shuttle info mean for you.
    1. Please show up at Uncle Howies in the morning if you are driving and have more room.
    2. Please let me know if you cannot find someone to shuttle you back to your car after the ride.
    3. Please let me know if you need a ride either to Redlands or up the hill.

We will meet in Redlands at Uncle Howies around 8am and try to be at South Fork and moving around 9am.

If you are interested please RSVP here on STR or on Facebook.

Here are two versions of the ride from year's past:

    Route 1:
South Fork - Middle Control - Single Track through Thomas Hunting Grounds - Fire road down to 38 - 38 into Redlands (GPS ended before ride).
    http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/5584533

    Route 2:
South Fork - Middle Control - Single Track through Thomas Hunting Grounds - Fire Road to Morton Peak - SART from Morton Peak to end of SART - Road back into Redlands
    http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=40388

    Hope to see you there.
If you have any questions please post them to this thread. Please check out www.bikeforbender.com for more details on our campaign.

Liz and I replied in the wrong thread - we're in!

Phil just said he better start riding again now...

Russell - we have a truck with a 4 bike T2 rack and an empty tail gate for more bikes - room for 3 more bodies and garb in my truck AND yes I would LOVE to have a driver bring it back down.

Anyone want to carpool from South OC?

The Pizza at Uncle Howies is AWESOME! Almost stopped there last night on my way down the hill .

I wanted to update everyone on Hellride which will be taking place this weekend. As Al mentioned in the previous post Ellsworth Handcrafted Bikes will be with us out this weekend for the ride. They will be bringing with them a demo fleet of 6-12 bikes for anyone who is interested to take on the ride with them. They will also be providing some shuttle service with any extra capacity that they have in their shuttle van. So far I have had a few offers from non-riders to come up to the start of the ride and drive cars back down so we shouldn’t need too many drivers to get back up the hill afterwards.

I would like to solicit one more time for anyone who has a significant other that might be able to drive cars back down. If so please let me know via PM.

The plan is to get moving from Uncle Howies around 8AM and get to the trail and moving around 9AM. We will be out of the parking lot by 8am and I am not keeping a list of everyone coming so if you do show up late I cannot guarantee that we will still be there. I would suggest that if you can, try to be there around 7:30. I implore everyone to please show up early so that we can try to finish “on time” (we will be holding a raffle at the end of the ride and would like everyone there for it).

This ride generally takes about 5-7 hours for the last groups to complete and around 4-4.5 hours for the fastest groups to complete so if you are planning on staying for the raffle which we really hope you can stay for, expect to be in Redlands until around 5-6:30 PM. I know it's a long day but it will be a fun ride and the raffle is for a really good cause (www.bikeforbender.com)

I will be posting again later this week with more info on what to bring and any last minute details I can think of. Right now the plan is to have some water and food at the Angelus Oaks post office/restaurant so that we can replenish our supplies for the rest of the ride. I am working out the details on this now but will put that info in my post later this week. I am looking forward to seeing everyone out there this weekend with the rain we have received lately the trails should be in fantastic shape.

*****If you have any questions please reply to this thread or pm me. If you want my phone number to get in touch in the morning please pm me.

I am thinking about joining the ride at Angelus Oaks and doing a "heck" ride. Are there any thoughts on this?
We have ridden South Fork to Angelus Oaks, including the Middle control road, and don't have any trouble with the terrain.
Just a little afraid to commit to the 34 miles. Thats why the maybe RSVP.

    Any thoughts?
When you have done South Fork to Angelus Oaks how have you felt at the end of the ride? There are 2 substantial climbs after Angelus Oaks (the climb directly afterwards and the climb up Morton Peak). Other than those two climbs its mostly downhill from Angelus Oaks. The climb after the store is about the same difficulty as Middle Control but is only about half as long and the climb up Morton Peak is about 1.25 miles and is quite difficult. The Morton Peak climb is tough 8-11% grade but because it is short its not too bad, it is also optional if you get to the bottom of the climb and don't want to keep going its all down hill for about 7-10 miles from there.

If you would like to meet us at Angelus Oaks I would guess we will be there between 12:30 and 1:30 but its really a guessing game with the number of people that we are expecting on this ride.

My suggestion is take a look at this info and the profile graph I posted earlier and make a decision. Its for a great cause and we would love to have you come out.

Whoo! Hellride is going to be a great ride tomorrow. I wanted to send some last minute reminders and details for the ride tomorrow. Most of you STR folks don't need this info but here it is anyway. Pay attention to point #2 regarding water/food at the halfway point.

    1. Double check that you bring all the essentials – Helmet, gloves, shoes, sunglasses, etc.

    2. Snacks/Lunch – We will not be stopping long enough in Angelus Oaks to stop at the restaurant for lunch. We will however have a car parked in Angelus Oaks with some oranges and cookies. We will also have water available thanks to the friendly people at Whispering Pines cabins in Angelus Oaks. This is where we will be stopping for lunch. If there is anything you would like to leave at the halfway point such as food or water or spare parts please find me in the morning and we can get this stuff stashed.

    3. Bring layers. – it’s almost always really cold in the morning but then usually warms up in the afternoon. Also, some sections of the trail are slightly grown over. A long sleeve shirt will help considerably with keeping the branches at bay. We will see what happens tomorrow with the weather, right now it’s calling for clouds/fog up high and partially cloudy in Redlands.

    4. Bring water. You will need at least enough water to get to Angelus Oaks. This is about 12 miles so pack accordingly.

    5. Bring tubes. – flat’s seem to be pretty common on this ride so please try to bring at least 1 per person 2 is better.

    6. Bring bike tools if you have them.

    7. Bring a tire pump if you have one.

    8. Sunblock (you never know)

    9. If you have room bring some bandages and other miscellaneous medical supplies, just in case.

    10. I think that the parking lot at South Fork requires a National Forest Adventure pass so if anyone has extra’s please bring them for the driver’s that are parking at the top.

    11. Bring some cash for the raffle and pizza and beer afterwards at Uncle Howies.

    12. Probably most importantly, make sure that your bike is in working order before we get out there. It will make the ride more enjoyable for everyone.

    Optional:
    a. Cell phone
    b. Camera

We plan to leave the Uncle Howies parking lot at 8am sharp tomorrow.

If you have any problems or other questions send me a PM.

Look forward to seeing everyone out there tomorrow.
